“I can’t be with you, Jacob. Edward and I are about to start a life together. A home, a family.”
Bella said those words like she meant them, even holding her left hand up to flash her engagement ring for emphasis.
Those words crushed Jacob’s heart to pieces.
“But are you happy?” he asked, his eyes looking into hers. She wouldn’t look at him.
“Of course I’m happy. I love him. He loves me.” Was that a falter in her voice?
Jacob stepped forward and put his large hands on her shoulders. Her eyes closed briefly as she felt the warmth of his hands.
“I love you, Bella. I can make you happy. We can make a life together, we can make a home. I want to be with you.”
She looked up at me, tears forming in her eyes. “No, Jacob, we can’t.” Her voice was a whisper. Maybe she wasn’t so sure after all.
Jacob’s hands moved down her arms, leaving warmth in their wake. Bella was never warm like this when she was with Edward. Would she be able to leave the warmth behind? She felt his hands take hers and squeeze them.
“Bella. We can. I can’t give you forever but I can give you a lifetime of happiness and warmth and light.”
Bella pulled away as more tears rolled down her cheeks. She shook her head. “I can’t, Jake.” She turned to leave, but he grabbed her hand and spun her around. He pulled her into a passionate kiss that promised her everything he’d said. Happiness, warmth, and light. Bella pushed him away and without another look, ran back to her truck. She started it up and left La Push as quickly as she could.
Back home, she sat on her bed, curled up under the covers. She could still feel the warmth of his touch. Her lips tingled from the kiss.
The warmth suddenly disappeared as Edward’s arms wrapped around her. She didn’t even hear him come into the room. He breathed her in and smiled. “Just think, Bella. In less than a week, you’ll be Bella Cullen. We can begin our forever.”
Bella smiled at his words, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes. Thank God he couldn’t read her thoughts. She turned to look up at him and ran her fingers through his hair. She could only see her fingers running through black hair as warm arms enveloped her.
A content sigh escaped her lips and Edward smiled, think he caused it. “I’ll let you get to sleep, Bella. Alice wants you at the house early tomorrow to work on hair and makeup for the wedding. I’ll come get you before sunrise.” He smiled again and kissed her forehead gently before leaving as quietly at he came.
Bella pulled the covers tighter around her and closed her eyes. She needed to get to sleep, but all she saw in her mind was Jacob.
Bella awoke to feel a hand running down her arm. She smiled softly. “Jacob…” she whispered, still half asleep.
“Jacob?” Edward said, pulling his hand back.
Bella gasped and opened her eyes. Edward was standing beside her bed looking at her like she’d just slapped him.
“Edward….I didn’t know, I thought-“
“You thought I was Jacob.”
“It’s not what it...” No, it was what it sounded like. She sighed and looked down. “I’m sorry, Edward.”
“We’ve been through this before, Bella. You said you and the wolf were friends. Just friends.”
“We are…”
“But?”
“But I don’t know about this. About us.” Great, more tears. “It’s just…I’m so confused, Edward. I love you. So much. But I love him, too. I can’t ignore it. I-“
“No more, Bella,” Edward said calmly. “I’ll give you a day. Think about it. Think about what I can offer you - eternity, everything you’ve wanted, everything you’ve asked for - and think about what Jacob can give you. I’ll come by in the morning.” He leaned forward and kissed her, but lacked the passion that Jacob’s had. “Choose me, Bella.” He left and his Volvo could be heard roaring off down the road.
Bella stayed in her room most of the day. She left to make Charlie breakfast and dinner, but always returned to her room. After dinner, she took a seat by her window and looked out. She couldn’t bear the thought of choosing one of them. She knew if she chose Edward, she couldn’t see Jacob again and vice versa. Could she live with that? By the time she went to bed, she’d made her decision. She fell into a dreamless sleep with her hand clasping the diamond heart on her bracelet.
Warmth. Light. Happiness. Bella felt it even before she opened her eyes. The sun was coming through her window and she could feel the warmth of the rays on her body. A smile tugged at the corners on her lips. She opened her eyes and saw the sun outside. She knew what her choice was now.
She pulled into the Cullen’s driveway twenty minutes later. She got out of the truck and walked to the front door. Edward opened it and smiled, putting his arms out to embrace her. But the smile was only brief when he felt her put something in his hand. The diamond heart charm and the engagement ring. He looked away from it, not wanting it to be true.
“Bella…” he whispered.
“I’m sorry, Edward,” she said, her eyes getting misty. “I’m sorry.” She turned away and ran back to her truck. She winced when she heard the front door slam. She quickly left the property and drove to La Push.
As luck would have it, her truck stopped working as she drove onto the reservation. “No! No, no, no!” she exclaimed, hitting the steering wheel. She put her head on it and grumbled. As she was about to get out of the truck and walk to Jake’s, she heard a motorcycle and turned towards it, hoping against hope it was him. It was Embry.
“Truck break down again, Bella? Maybe you outta think about a new mode of tran-“
“I don’t have time for jokes, Embry, where’s Jacob?” she said. “I need to see him right now.” She had her hands clasped under her chin and that’s when Embry noticed the lack of sparkles on a certain finger. He grinned and motioned for her to get on his bike. “Hop on, I’ll take you right to him.” She did so and they were soon off to find Jacob.
They pulled up to the beginning of a trail that went through the woods, up a small mountain of rocks, and stopped at a cliff overlooking the ocean. Bella jumped off the back of Embry’s motorcycle before he could even come to a complete stop.
“Whoa, Bella!” he said, but laughed and shook his head as he watched her run for the forest. Bella didn’t think of the fallen branches or the tree roots that could trip her. She didn’t think as the branches and leaves scratched her arms, legs, and face. Her jacket was snagged on a limb, but she pulled out of it and continued running. As she drew closer to the edge, her heart sped up. Would he be there? She started climbing the rocks, not stopping for a breath until she reached the top.
And there he was. He had his back turned to her as his beautiful eyes looked at the horizon where the sea met the sun. The wind whipped at his hair which had come loose from the rubber band he’d tied it back with.
“Jake!” she called out.
When he turned, he looked at her standing there before him. He blinked a couple times to make sure it wasn’t an illusion.
“Bells,” he whispered and the two ran towards each other. His strong arms wrapped around her and pulled her close as he spun her around. He had his usual radiant smile on his face. She laughed and held tightly to him, afraid she would lose him again. When he set her down, she looked into his eyes as her hands caressed his face.
“It’s you, Jake. It’s been you this whole time. You’re the one I choose.”
Another smile exploded on his face and he pulled her into another passionate kiss. This time she moved her fingers through his hair and returned the kiss.
There at the top of the cliff, bathed in sunlight, Bella found her happiness, warmth, and light.
