This took me two hours to write O_O

Nov 04, 2008 15:11

I've apparently written too much for an LJ comment, so I'm making this a post on my own journal. This is largely addressed to Emma and Pud in response to their posts earlier this afternoon. Please read the following knowing that it's all said with the greatest of respect, political discussions usually become heated, and I've no wish for that to ( Read more... )

Dude, I'm not disagreeing with anything you're saying. In fact, your points are backing up exactly the thing I was laying down. British politics inspire very little enthusiasm in us and we in turn have all but given up on it....it's a sad state of affairs really ( ... )

Thanks, no. Jump leads for the brain might be useful though, I haven't used it nearly enough and I think I strained something.

Like I say, I'm not sure I disagreed with you on any points. The tone of the posts I thought was a little harsh on people for taking a vast interest in affairs overseas while spurning politics at home. It's absolutey a good thing to encourage people to take an interest in local affairs, but not so much to lambast them for making the decision to spurn them. Perhaps that's because again, I'm that person.

... and I apologise, because I didn't understand your line "I guess I should be saying this to the actual political parties over here more than the voters?". Or rather, I didn't understand what you were suggesting should be said to the parties, so if the message is "give us more to care about", you're right, because I don't care about why Suit Guy A says Suit Guy B sucks .

I really didn't think my post sounded harsh...sorry about that if it did....0_o I don't think i said much at all about the US elections other than that I was keeping my fingers crossed and empathising with the pressure many Americans must feel under today.

And then, when I came to talk about our own shores, yes - 'Give us more to care about' is exactly what I meant. :)

Not so much your posts, but Pud's came across as such. I thought, at least.

You make a lot of very good points, and in Britain it really is true that "it doesn't matter who you vote for, the government always get in"

The American election actually means something - and it's going to affect us whether we like it or not. Not to mention I have plenty of American friends online who are going to be more immediately affected, so of course I have an interest in their election.
(Not to mention, if you hang around on any big comms like metaquotes, you can't HELP but get interested in American politics.)

Love it. I think I could just replace my whole post with this.

I think the "Don't fuck it up America!" sentiment comes from the backlash against GWB, and the impression that McCain was going to follow in his quasi-republican footsteps. I remember the same feeling in 2004 when they re-elected him and everyone was in shock that they could do such a f*cking stupid thing. They f*cked up and no mistake, and I don't think we could bear to see them do it again. Thankfully for us they made (what we see as) the right choice, yay, and isn't the outpouring of positive (internet lol) energy that's going on today inspiring? I love it, really do.

I'm telling you this like you don't already know it, I know you do, so I'm just sayin'.
