Academia for academia's sake is so pretentious. My English class keeps telling me I should be dissecting detective fiction for deeper social implications, and I'm just sick of it all. Actually, the advertising industry gives us a great deal. It gives us a huge amount of data and research about the manipulation of human thought and opinion. Whether it gives more than it takes, though, is another question.

There is nothing to gain from an organization whose sole purpose is to manipulate the masses into thinking a material object is NECESSARY.

I second that. For awhile I toyed with the idea of getting into advertising simply because the opportunity for creative expression, for making beautiful things, is not only almost limitless but also well compensated. But the bottom line is that advertisers exist for only one purpose, and I sure as hell can't dedicate my life to encouraging materialism.
