The remnants of a dream slipped away from Donna as she unwillingly struggled into consciousness. The bed was so very warm and she snuggled deeper into the covers, reluctant to open her eyes and embrace another day in her ordinary life.
Although… now she thought about it, the bed she was lying in didn’t feel all that familiar to her. All at once, yesterday flooded back. Adipose. Matron Cofelia. Spaceships. Penny. TARDIS.
The TARDIS! That was where she was!
Now she really didn’t want to open her eyes. Because there was always that chance that yesterday had been a dream, and she was waking up in Chiswick without the Doctor. And that would be too much to bear. But staying curled up here forever just in case she was about to have her bubble burst didn’t seem like a particularly viable option…
Just then, a voice broke into her thoughts.
“Donna!”
Her eyes snapped open. And there he was. The Doctor, standing at the door - the door to her new bedroom, a room that felt both alien and so much like home already - calling her name and looking amused at her sleepiness.
“Toast?” he offered.
“Oh, yes please!” she answered happily.
She smiled as he grinned and went off down the corridor.
Wriggling her legs out from underneath the duvet, she stood up, yawning.
So. Toast first. And then? Then perhaps she would take a better look around the ship. What next? A new planet? An age far in the past? Who knew? Anything could happen. Anything at all.
Life had never seemed so exciting. She felt as though she was teetering on the edge of a new chapter, with forever stretching out ahead so far into the distance. And it was going to be brilliant.
