Author's notes: Response to the Weekly Drabble Challenge #5 at doctor_donna . I've never written a drabble before so I hope it's okay. Oh, and it's kinda shippy too which I've also never done... =S
They'd all left their mark upon him: countless meetings and friendships and goodbyes. He was all of them in part; a melange of the people who'd travelled with him and defined him and then left him with only memories to clutch at.
But she stood out more than any, a flame-haired goddess who had burned through his life and warmed his guarded soul. Now he was scarred inside at the loss of her and empty because of the space she'd left. Her fire was doused to a feeble glow, a weak replica of the beautiful pyre of compassion it had once been. It had taken with it part of his, too, on that night that now brought stinging tears upon recollection.
Some people get tattoos of the name of the one they love, an ebony declaration of devotion for all to see. The Doctor didn't need that: her name was tattooed across his hearts forever - no less visible or permanent than if it had been etched in ink.
