Summary: Jonghyun starts daycare and makes a friend.
Notes: My friend requested a shamelessly fluffy toddler Jongkey drabble from me. All my drabbles end up being about 2k full of words. Sob.
"Backpack? Check. Spare shirt? Check. Spare pants? Check. Boy…?” said a woman as she double checked the green dinosaur backpack. She went into the kitchen to press a kiss on a little boy’s head. “Honey, you need to eat faster and less messy. Most of the clothes that I have to wash are yours!” she mock yelped as the little boy roared loudly in response.
“So. Mommy. Where are we going?” said the boy as he skipped outside. His mom called him back as he’d forgotten his backpack. “It’s really, really boring going grocery shopping and clothes shopping and, and other shopping with you. So I hope we go to a fun place that I will like," he babbled as he got in the car.
His mom laughed and buckled his seat belt. “Jonghyun. I think you are going like this place.” All she got was another roar.
-
Jonghyun’s eyes widened as he took in the scene before him. The entire room was decorated in cheery golden yellow wallpaper with various art projects hung on the walls. Approximately a dozen children were milling around the room, with two older boys keeping a close watch. Colorful cubbies and coat racks lined the walls next to the entrance.
“Hello, you must be Mrs. Kim. And is this Jonghyun…?” said a blue-aproned, smiling man. Jonghyun noticed that he had a purple handprint on the blue apron. He bent down to Jonghyun’s eye level. “My name is Jinki, nice to meet you!” The little boy stared at the aproned Jinki before pretending to bite the elder’s nose.
“Jonghyun. Behave,” said his mother sternly. “I’m sorry, he’s going through a dinosaur period where he likes to bite things. I am Mrs. Kim and this is Jonghyun. We’re here to start his first day and -” Both adults were startled as the little boy quickly shed his coat and backpack and ran off to play. His first stop was a nearby table where a single child was calmly finger painting.
“Hi I’m Jonghyun. You’re a pretty girl. Wanna be friends?” Jonghyun grinned in a winning manner. He made sure to show off his new tooth. The girl stared at him before rubbing a small paint covered hand all over Jonghyun’s cheek. At Jonghyun’s surprised expression, a small impish smile bloomed across the other’s face.
“Kibummie is a boy. You look like a dummy with a big open mouth and a pink face.”
The boy, Kibum, giggled before resuming his painting, this time by dumping glitter on what appeared to be a big pink lollipop. Jonghyun quickly closed his mouth and ran back to his mom, face flushing a dark red.
-
“As I said, I’m really glad you could fit him in, especially at such short notice. I think daycare would be good for him, he could learn to not be so hyperactive and stop biting people-oh honey what happened to you?” said his mother, surprise on her face. “Five minutes in and you’re already filthy!”
“I see you have met Kibum,” Jinki laughed, bending down with a clean wet towel. After the little boy was cleaned up he straightened up and pointed at the handprint on his apron, “Kibummie likes to paint on me too.”
-
When Jonghyun’s mother had left, Jinki led Jonghyun back towards the classroom, pointing out the different types of activities he could do.
“What do you want to do Jonghyun? Do you like reading? Do you want to play with blocks? Taemin is teaching everyone how to dance right over there. Do you want to dance…?” Jonghyun tugged Jinki back towards the little table, where the boy from earlier was still painting.
“Kibummie! I have to sit next to you. And paint diamonds!”
Jinki sighed good-naturedly and went to get more clean towels. Kibum usually ended up painting more on Jinki than anyone else.

“Okay children, snack time!” called Taemin. He tucked a stray strand of long hair behind his ear and smiled sunnily at the few kids crowding around him. “It’s nice outside, so we’re going to eat on the picnic tables! Minho-hyung is already setting up your lunches.” And with that he shooed the children outside.
“Kibummie! Let’s go let’s go! You can share my lunch with me,” squeaked Jonghyun. He had knocked over his chair in excitement. Jinki had left them a few minutes earlier to wash paint off his face and out of his hair.
Kibum slowly put away his paints and art supplies before picking up the chair that Jonghyun had toppled over, finally setting aside his painting in the center of the table, and pushing in his chair. He curled a small chubby hand around Jonghyun’s wrist and pulled lightly, signaling that they should be leaving.
“C’mon Jjong, let’s go, Kibummie is hungry.”
Jonghyun giggled at new nickname and moved to link Kibum’s hand with his. They went outside.
-
“Kibummie, do you want my apple, cuz you dropped yours,” coaxed Jonghyun, breaking his apple slice into two.
“Yes please! Thank you Jjong,” Kibum said shyly, taking said apple slice and popping it into his mouth. His chewed contently, cheeks puffed out and full. Jonghyun wiggled his feet in elation.
“Kibummie, do you want more apple?” a deep voice said. Both looked up to see Minho standing above them, eyebrow quirked fondly. “I can cut more for you since you like apples so much.”
Jonghyun glared at the tall boy, he was going to give Kibum the rest of his apple! How dare Minho get in his way!
“Thank you Minho-hyung, but Kibummie is okay,” said Kibum boredly. He edged closer to Jonghyun. “Yah you have pudding on your face. Why are you messy-messy,” Kibum chided. He reached into his pocket and took out a colorful handkerchief with small little Buzz Lightyears all over it. Jonghyun was surprised as the younger wiped his face.
Behind them Minho chuckled as he was ignored.

After snack time, the three adults led them to a playground. Immediately the children scattered; some running towards the play structure, others towards the swings, and the rest ran to the merry-go-round, calling for one of the adults to push them. Jonghyun loved the swings and started to drag the suddenly-quiet Kibum behind him.
“The swings are the best! I’ll push you until you are 100 feets off the ground!” He was met with more silence. Seeing that the younger boy was acting weird, Jonghyun chanced a look.
“Kibummie, are you sad?” he asked cautiously.
“….no.”
“Why are you not noisy?”
The younger boy looked at him and then at the swings. He looked down at his bright yellow sneakers and mumbled a response.
“Say again? I don’t hear you,” Jonghyun said, leaning closer.
Kibum took in a deep breath and mumbled, “Kibummie is scared of going high up. Kibummie is scared of the swings…”
Jonghyun watched as Kibum’s nervously toed the ground, shoe scuffing the sidewalk. He made a silly face, which made the other boy laugh. “Do you wanna do something else? I can play swings later, when you’re not scared.”
“We can still play on the swings, Kibummie pushes you and then you can push Kibummie. Kibummie won’t be scared if Jjong is there,” said the other, cheeks pink. Jonghyun grinned.
At first Kibum is dreadfully scared, clinging onto the chains in fear, and not letting Jonghyun push him. Taemin stops by to check on them, soothing a scared Kibum. After a few more tries on the swings, this time with Taemin’s soothing presence and encouraging words, Kibum eventually gets over his fear of heights, and demands that Jonghyun push him higher and higher.
When they trade places, Kibum pushes and shoves with all of his might, hoping that the older boy swings just as high as he did. He ends up pushing Jonghyun off the swing. They have so much fun on the swings that they miss out playing on the merry-go-round like they had planned.

“Jjong, you are on Kibummie’s blanket. Jjonggggg,” Kibum whined as he tugged at said blanket. It was currently naptime and the older boy was out like a light, limbs sprawled everywhere. Kibum huffed and gave up tugging on his blanket. He carefully wedged himself under Jonghyun’s arm and snuggled close to the older boy. He was tired too, couldn’t anyone else tell?
Taemin ended up discovering the two a few minutes later. He laughed into his hand as he saw how close the two boys had grown to be. With another giggle, he took out his phone and carefully snapped a photo. Jonghyun wrinkled his nose as the flash went off.
-
“Kibummie I want to be a dinosaur,” hummed Jonghyun. He was rolling around on the ground.
“No, Jjong. You are Kibummie’s husband. You go to work and then you come home. And you talk to Kibummie. And say how beautiful Kibummie is,” said Kibum, pretending to vacuum.
“Can I be a dinosaur at work?”
“No. Your job is to be a person. Kibummie didn’t marry a dinosaur,” Kibum scowled and poked at Jonghyun’s leg. He went to their ‘house’ and went through the ‘door’.
“Yah house, can you move your leg. Kibummie needs to vacuum underneath your leg,” said Kibum, patting the ‘house’ fondly.
Minho lifted his leg, amused as the little boy crawled underneath, making soft vacuum noises. He looked over to see Jonghyun still on the ground, pouting. Minho wasn’t sure if Jonghyun was pouting because he couldn’t be a dinosaur or because he no longer had Kibum’s full attention.
“Hey Kibummie, house-hyung is clean enough, how about you go have dinner with Jonghyun?”
“Okay!” the little boy chirped. He crept from his spot near Minho’s foot and scuttled towards Jonghyun before jumping on him, all while making vacuum puttering sounds.
Minho shook his head as the two wrestled playfully on the ground.

“Taeminnie-hyung is Kibummie’s favorite, cause he has long, long pretty hair. Sometime he lets Kibummie put flowers in it,” Kibum explained. It was time to go home and they were waiting for their parents, only a handful of kids were still waiting. “Jinki-hyung is nice to paint on. And Minho-hyung is my house.” Jonghyun picked at his green dinosaur backpack and listened to the other boy prattle on. He didn’t want to leave.
“Kibummie,” he started, interrupting the other boy. “Are you coming back tomorrow?”
The other boy blinked large round eyes at him before giggling, “No, silly. Tomorrow Kibummie is gonna stay home with Gramma cause we don’t come on Sundays. I’ll see you the next day!”
“Bong-Bong,” called a female voice. Both boys looked up to see an elderly woman standing in the doorway. She waved a small colorful bag at them. “Time to go home. Gramma bought your favorite sweet bread. You can tell me about your new friend on the way back.” Kibum skipped over to his grandmother and helped her take the bag. She pets his fluffy hair.
“Bye Jjong! See you day after tomorrow!” he waved cheerily, before skipping out the door. Jonghyun waved back before smiling to himself. He poked at his dinosaur backpack some more.
“So, Jonghyun, did you enjoy your first day here?” Jonghyun looked up to see Jinki smiling at him.
“Yes Jinki-hyung. I had lots of fun! I like Kibummie and you and Taeminnie-hyung and even Minho-house-hyung.” Somewhere behind him, Jonghyun could hear a deep voice bewilderedly ask why he was being called house-hyung. Jonghyun swung his legs absently, making room on the small bench for Jinki to sit next to him.
“Well I’m glad you had fun today,” the older man said. He ruffled Jonghyun’s hair and started swinging his feet in tandem with the toddler. Jonghyun giggled. A soft ring of the doorbell could be heard. His mother peeked her head through the door and smiled as she saw her son. He yelled excitedly, launching himself at her, babbling a mile a minute. Jinki cringed, feeling his ears ring.
“Mommy! I had a great, great fun day! Let’s go home so I can tell you about it,” he said excitedly. He had put his coat on backwards in his excitement and was currently running out the door. His mother sighed and went to chase after her son, bowing to the three helpers as she left. The three older boys laughed at the new hyperactive addition to their class before the door opened again, revealing the new energetic addition himself.
“I forgot to say goodbye. Goodbye hyungs,” he said. He closed the door.
