Icon texture tutorial

I'm gonna show you how to make icon textures from a stock image.

First, you take a photo. You should think about the colors you want for your textures and the type of textures you're making.
For this example, I'm gonna use a part of a photo made by alilone. You can find the big picture here

The image I'm working with is 900x1204. This is a good size, because we have a lot of space to work.

1.Light textures

The first step is blurring. I went with Gaussian blur, Radius 28,9:

If you check the Preview check box, you'll be able to see the effect of the blur on the entire image and it might be easier to decide that way.
I chose a pretty strong blur because I wanted to lose the details and keep just the colors.

Next, apply the Wind filter:

with these settings:

You can see some small vertical black lines, in the middle of the orange colored area. That was caused by the wind filter. We're gonna correct it by reapplying the filter: Ctrl+F
The change is most visible on the petal in the right of the picture:
From
to

(Okay, not so visible because of the size of these pics :D, but it's there and it should be fixed)

Now, using the selection tool and holding the Shift key down, to ensure the area is square, select a part of the image.
Image-> Crop
Image-> Image size:

and modify width and height to have 100 pixels.

You'll have somehting like this:

which you can save in the png format, to preserve the quality of the image.

To make more textures, you need to return to your image and select more areas. You can do that by repeatedly pressing Undo, or bring the history panel to the front, if don't have it already:

Now, scroll up in the list until you see the last of the Wind filters:

click on the "Wind" line.
You will have the big image again, waiting for you to select another area :)

Hope this was clear, if you have any questions, just ask :)

I hope to continue with some other tutorials on how to make textures form stock images, using different PS filters. If you have any ideas, please tell me :)
