Okee, so I decided I would do a reactionary post each week, just cos I can. I'm a little bit late to the party - always am - but I figured I might as well share a few quick thoughts. So...
· The titles are really growing on me. I still love the old music best, but the new theme is really quite awesome.
· Nice set. The bit on DW Confidential about the making of Starship UK was interesting - I loved how they went about creating this wacky, retro version of London with a feeling of wartime spirit, what with the market stalls and rickshaws and little flags.
· Was anyone else reminded of ‘The Long Game’ in Series 1? With Floor 500? I dunno, the tower block with the lifts just made me think of it.
· Creepy face things. Liked those. Moffat does frozen expression monsters very well - the gasmask people, the clockwork robots, the people inhabited by the Vashta Nereda. A monster whose facial expressions you can’t read is doubly creepy.
· Liz 10! She was epic. Even a thousand years in the future, we’ve still got a kick-ass monarch :D Before we found out who she was, my friend’s first reaction was ‘Liz Ten - that sounds like ‘listen’’. Turns out she was wrong but I thought it was rather a good idea.
· The ‘forget’ and ‘protest’ buttons were also a nice concept. Slightly Orwellian, no? And definitely echoing the attitude many of us have today - if I don’t have to think about it, it doesn’t matter.
· The Doctor and Amy getting eaten and then vomited out = yak. Thank goodness they didn’t make the sick look real, because I have a phobia of vomit. Even as it was, I kept thinking ‘Ew, they’re still covered in dried sick’ for the rest of the episode. However, one thing amused me - the Daily Mail, when they released pictures of the Doctor and Amy apparently soaking wet, suggested that the writers were trying to sex up Amy again by going for the wet t-shirt look. Somehow I don’t think being covered in whale sick is in any way sexy? :P
· Oh, another thing about that part - Amy, did you seriously just use the word ‘minging’? Nobody says minging any more.
· Dark!Doctor appeared for the first time. I enjoyed a bit of Raging Doctor. Reminded me of Nine getting angry at the human race.
· Not sure how I feel about the ending - how did Amy know so much? I’m not sure I find it entirely believable that she would be able to work all that out and then have the conviction to act upon her conclusions. A life-or-death decision based on an analogy between Time Lords and star whales? Hmm. Still, it was nice to have a companion save the day, that’s always good *is unable to not think of Donna*
· Another thing: star whales. Slightly cringy name. But I can live with that.
· Can I just say, watching Confidential it is SO obvious that Matt fancies Karen :P
Overall, I liked it muchly. I'm feeling a bit 'meh' about the return of the Daleks next week - seriously, have they not been done to death yet? - but the Weeping Angels are back the week after that so I can't wait for that :)
To round things up, a selection of quotes which appeared on Facebook last night following the episode:
- “‘Sorry, checking all the water in this area. There’s an escaped fish’ *taps side of nose*” Genius line. My status. 5 people liked it - Doctor Who has somehow become popular!
- “‘What are you gonna do?’ ‘What I always do. Stay out of trouble. Badly.’”
- “'You look human' 'No, you look Time Lord! We came first!'" (I didn’t have the heart to point out to him that this a Ten line. I'm just pleased he's watching it)
You have no idea how stoked I am that people are coming out of the closet as Whovians! It's the age of the nerd! :D
