i think, had they tried to kill Gilligan, it would have made for some hilarious sitcom along the lines of Roadrunner and Coyote.

and perhaps if you look deeply enough into the shows, they were trying to kill G. all the while, but he somehow managed to keep one step ahead, and outwit them everytime without provoking an all-out unveiled assault...
