Eternal Sunshine

- - -

Maybe this is what being dead is like.

Light, warm and gentle, beams through a blanket of clouds.

I guess I don’t mind. It’s so warm.

Human skin. Donghae’s in his human skin. The way the light hits him almost reminds him of his colored scales. But there are no colors, just a faint whispering memory. He takes in the light as it touches his bare chest.

The sun…why isn’t it drying me up? I feel fine.

His eyes scan the earth, green and blue, stretching out onto the horizon. He’s standing at the edge of a pond, and the water is so clear and so inviting. It’s a perfect reflection of the sky implanted into the ground. But he stays away from touching the actual liquid that he fears will turn him back. There’s something in his heart that tells him he should change back-become his rainbow self-but he doesn’t do it.

A wave passes over him that slows his motions. He rocks his head back and closes his eyes in ecstasy.

Maybe this is heaven.

Something slips into Donghae’s hand-something soft and comfortable. And it fits so well, but not quite perfectly, and he knows it’s a hand. It feels familiar.

He opens his eyes to something he can’t believe.

Eunhyuk…

The hand in his grips tightly, never wanting to let go, and Donghae can feel this.

Hey.

Donghae blinks, and soft brown hair frames Donghae’s eyes. Are we dead?

Eunhyuk shrugs in what seems like slow motion. I don’t know, but I know I should be. But…but why are you here?

Probably for the same reason you are. So I guess that does mean we’re dead.

Did you find me somewhere?

Donghae nods, throat tingling from the memory. I did.

The hand squeezes. Eunhyuk’s heart beats so quickly when he feels the hand he isn’t holding touch his cheek.

Why’d you leave the water, Eunhyuk?

Silence speaks louder than any words Eunhyuk may have wanted to say. He still wants to say something. Their eyes lock together as he makes himself think of what to say. Because you left.

He already knows about this reason, but it still stings to hear it from Eunhyuk directly. Donghae doesn’t really notice, but his tears are floating around them as they flow gently from his eyes.

I’m so sorry. All I’ve ever done is hurt you…I’m so sorry.

I know. I know you are. But it’s okay. I know…that…that you love you Hankyung. You don’t love me, but that’s alright. That’s alright. Eunhyuk repeats the last words to force himself into believing.

I do, though. I love you, too.

Not as much as you love him.

This bites Donghae’s emotions, jabbing at his heart. He knows it’s true-so perfectly and painfully true.

But he’s not here. I probably won’t ever see him again, Donghae suddenly mentions. It’s just the two of us now, Eunhyuk.

Flashes of hot skin against skin, heavy panting and gruff moans pass through his mind, reminding Eunhyuk of another time when it was just the two of them. But that time ended. Their time would always come to an end.

I don’t know about that.

What do you mean? We’re dead, Donghae adds with almost undetectable sarcasm.

I just feel like we won’t be here for much longer. We won’t be together for much longer.

Why would you say that?

Eunhyuk sighs, his chest tightens, his eyes feel wet. I can feel you moving away.

What? I’m not… Donghae panics and holds on strong, not wanting this hand in his to leave.

But, you are.

Donghae listens to how soft Eunhyuk’s voice is getting. Fading gradually, fading slowly, and scaring Donghae out of his mind. He’s too far away, but he feels a hand in his like a ghost’s shadow. The warmth of it is still barely there. He holds onto it like he’s still clinging to useless life-only this has much more meaning.

Kiss me one more time before we’re apart. Donghae feels the words crawl out of his slightly parted lips before he can think them through. Just one more time. Please.

The simple agreement is hardly over a whisper, and it echoes throughout Donghae’s mind.

Lips. Sweet lips he needs cling to his, but only for a second. In the blink of an eye, they’re gone.

No. No, don’t leave me! The hand is fading even more. Donghae’s tears are flying. Don’t leave…

I love you.

Don’t leave me. I changed my mind, I don’t just want one more-I don’t just want one more kiss. I-

The hand is almost gone. And then it is gone, and Donghae can’t speak anymore. He can’t breathe anymore.

But then a voice rings clear.

I’ll find you.

Donghae’s eyes snap open, and it’s dark. Nearly pitch black, and he’s freezing. His body is bare, and he can’t see a thing around him except highlights against leaves. He’s so cold that his teeth are chattering uncontrollably and his bones are quivering and the sweat against his body is something similar to how ice feels, and he can’t stand it.

“Are you okay?”

It’s a new voice. Donghae doesn’t know who this is, but he sees the shadow of his balled up form against the wet grass and leaves in front of him. The owner of the voice is shining a flashlight towards Donghae’s back.

“Hey, you. Are you alright?”

A coat falls over Donghae’s twitching shoulders. It feels like he’s sobbing, but he’s not. He doesn’t think he is. The stranger whose jacket he’s wearing over his back is pulling him to his feet. His height exceeds Donghae’s, but he seems a bit younger.

“Are you lost? Hurt?”

Donghae shakes his head.

The stranger sighs. “You’re lucky I’m traveling. I’ve got some clothes you can put on now,” he says, bringing the light way from Donghae’s body for some privacy.

“Th-Thank you,” Donghae rasps. His voice feels so unused, but not dry. The stranger utters a ‘you’re welcome’ and digs through a suitcase in a few seconds, using the ambient light from his car to show him where everything lay.

Donghae sees that they’re near a road, but he doesn’t see any cars whisk by between the time the stranger gives him the clothes and when he puts them on. The whole area is silent, and damp from what Donghae assumes could be rain.

“I’m Kyuhyun,” says the stranger. “What’s your name?”

Hesitation.

“Donghae.”

“Nice to meet you, Donghae. Do you have someplace you want me to drive you to?”

He shakes his head.

“Nowhere?”

“Nowhere,” the repeated word haunts Donghae.

Kyuhyun pauses, putting his hands in his jeans pockets. “Do you want to come with me, then?”

Donghae nods. He nods and gets into the car, in the passenger’s seat that Kyuhyun opens for him before going to the driver’s side. Donghae feels like he isn’t in control of his own body, or he’s having an out-of-body experience. Something along those lines.

And there’s something he’s forgetting. He knows he is.

He explores his mind, searching its corners as Kyuhyun’s car glides along the empty road. Donghae needs to remember something. He needs to remember someone.

I’ll find you.

The words hit him like a speeding train. His eyes bug out. He breathes in sharply.

He remembers the words. The voice.

He doesn’t remember the face.

Donghae collapses into tears, and Kyuhyun doesn’t have much of an idea of how to respond. The car comes to a steady stop right in the middle of the road, and before he knows it, he’s pulling Donghae into his arms. He’s holding this new person in his life, and even though he doesn’t know the reasons for Donghae’s tears, he holds him tight.

Kyuhyun whispers ‘everything will be fine’ into his ear.
