GENERAL

[Name:] Marvin Grossberg

[Age:] 72 holy shit, soon to be 73

[Birthday:] September 25th, 1952. This makes him a Libra as well as a Dragon. Self indulgent and magnanimous to the core.

[Gender:] Male

[Marital Status:] Divorced twice, married three times. His third wife, who he had been with the longest, has since passed away. That means he's a swingin' bachelor, ladies!

[Sexuality:] Straight, despite Phoenix's crazed belief to the contrary.

[Occupation:] Defense attorney, head of Grossberg Law Offices. He's eyeing retirement sometime soon, but he does love his work (despite how often it makes his hemmoroids flare). The brunt of the work is (and has been, for years,) handled by the other lawyers of his firm and his studious secretaries anyway. He takes long leisurely vacations frequently, and usually never shows up at the office until late morning or early afternoon.

CONNECTIONS

[Family:] Had a child with first wife Matilda, a son named Marvin Jr. who is now a man with a booming family of his own. Third wife Martha passed away about seven years ago, leaving behind two other children: Mary and Marcus, both of whom are also adults at this point in time. All three are splitting images of their father... which is to say that they are beautiful people.

[Friends:] Kristoph Gavin: Not a friend per se, but Grossberg respects the man as a talented attorney and greatly appreciates Kristoph's refined tastes. He fancies themselves men of similar calibres in that regard and if found at the same event, he unhesitatingly stops by with an overdramatic clearing of the throat to chat with the man. He doesn't regard Kristoph as a rival, having decades more experience than the younger attorney, but does acknowledge that Kristoph's firm is rising in prominence (or has risen, as Kristoph would probably enjoy pointing out).

[Enemies:] Redd White: Grossberg breathed a sigh of relief when the man was executed. Back in 2001, White offered him riches in exchange for information regarding DL-6. Having helped Misty Fey clear herself of any wrongdoing in the case, Grossberg revealed the medium and her circumstances and the police were made laughingstocks of across the country. Since the police then tried to find the person who had leaked the info, White blackmailed Grossberg over his actions, fleecing untold fortunes (and one beloved painting) from the attorney over the next fifteen years. Grossberg ended up regretting his actions sorely, both due to the consequences he himself faced and the terrible effects it had on Misty Fey's life and career. He found himself unable to act in the trial of Mia Fey's sister, but thankfully rookie Phoenix Wright stepped up to the plate. He narrowly continued (and continues) to avoid detection by the police over his past deeds, though he is still regretful and would help those affected by them to a great extent.

[Other:] Having spent nearly fifty years in the business, Grossberg is at least acquainted with most people in the legal sphere. He's not on particularly close terms with most of them, however.

Diego Armando: Once the top lawyer of Grossberg's firm, covering the man's hospital bills during the next five or so years was almost as costly as being blackmailed by Redd White. ...Okay, not really, but it was a terribly expensive amount. Grossberg has of course read of the circumstances behind State v. Iris by now, and finds it unfortunate that the former defense attorney was pushed to such extreme limits due to the past.

...He's also a little worried about how Diego will react the next time they see each other. But hopefully that will not happen any time soon...!

Mia Fey: Originally hiring her (and keeping her on even after a year of inactivity) simply because she was the daughter of Misty Fey, Mia more than proved herself as a competent lawyer-in fact, Grossberg ended up considering her the sole equal of the famed Gregory Edgeworth. He regards her as his quickest student, full of direction and ambition and when she parted to start up her own firm she left in good terms with him. He wasn't aware that she knew what he had done to her mother... and still isn't aware of that fact.

Robert Hammond: A lawyer that used to work in Grossberg's firm. He doesn't remember much of the man save that he won cases only for himself, not trusting in the client.

Maya Fey: Mia Fey's sister. Grossberg sincerely regrets that his hands were tied and that he was unable to take her case when she was accused of murdering Mia. He is relieved that she doesn't begrudge him this, and frequently wonders if she figured out that he was the one who ruined the reputation of her mother.

Phoenix Wright: Grossberg was extremely grateful that Phoenix stepped up to the plate and helped defend Maya when he could not. He viewed Phoenix as Mia's successor in many ways, and was happy to help the rookie lawyer where he could. Hearing news of Phoenix's disbarment, he was startled but accepted the news with some regret. He believes that it is indeed quite likely that Phoenix did stoop to forging evidence, and would express his disapproval if they should ever meet again. Such a shame, really!

CHARACTER

[General personality:] Grossberg's heart is in the right place but he has many weaknesses, being susceptible to both cowardice and various temptations (of the seven deadly sins, he's guilty of at least four). He is a showy individual, loving drawing attention, making a grand display of things and impressing people with his refined grandiosity (or what he believes to be his wonderfully sophisticated tastes). He tends to assess items based on their monetary value or lavishness rather than being capable to assess their true or practical worth. He is rather shallow in that regard, though there is still substance beneath.

He has been in the courtroom for a great many years and won and lost countless trials-the only man still in the courtroom now with more experience than him is the Judge-and he is certainly talented and knowledgeable, having climbed to the pinnacle of success with his firm. He believes in fighting for one's clients and uncovering the truth of things, but unlike other attorneys he has mentored, he holds a... more cynical or fragile view about the innocence of those he is defending. He remains a good if somewhat flakey teacher/mentor figure though, and has helped many of the best rise up in his profession (though some would argue he did not really contribute to their success).

Grossberg has a sharp memory for past events, often reminiscing about the days of his youth, when he was truly at the peak of success. He's rather forgetful about everyday current events (he's getting up there in age!), however. He is also very lazy, rarely exercising beyond the occasional walk, and loves to eat, drink, sleep in and otherwise indulge himself. He's had to reflect a lot on his past actions, and while he is repentant (and has certainly suffered and matured to a great degree, long before State v. Maya Fey even came to pass), he is still quite flawed in several ways. He is always willing to help, however; as mentioned above, his heart is in the right place.

[Appearance:] At 5'5 and 270 pounds (though he'll never admit it!), Grossberg is... big boned in polite terms, and morbidly obese by the standard definition. He sports a mustache and a mustache-shaped hairstyle, both of which are surprisingly still dark grey. This may be because he makes regular trips to Hazakura, taking advantage of their rejuvenation packages. He likes to wear brown and red suits-all of which have to be custom tailored for a man of his stature-and is never seen without his attorney's badge and a heavy solid gold pen he keeps lodged in the front left pocket of his jacket.

[Background:] Marvin Grossberg passed the bar in 1976, beginning as a headstrong rookie in various firms before starting up a practice of his own in his mid thirties. He was good at what he did, building quite a name for himself, quite a reputation, and quite an elaborate amount of wealth though he was also a big and lavish spender. Perhaps he was not quite as skilled as Gregory Edgeworth, and his record was not as stunning, but he has persevered over time. He also happens to be quite the good business manager (a skill that quite a few other attorneys don't seem to possess).

At 49, he helped clear Misty Fey of any charges of wrongdoing regarding DL-6. This was when he sold out her name and was subsequently blackmailed by Redd White. Due to the stress he gained quite the head of grey hairs and quite a few extra pounds over the years, along with all the symptoms of poor health that come along with being excessively corpulent.

Several distinctive names have passed through Grossberg Law Offices-Grossberg himself had a hand in training many of them, though he was ultimately outshone by quite a few. Having well passed the usual age of retirement even before State v. Maya Fey, Grossberg continues to work to this day, training the occasional rookie, taking the more frequent vacation, and in general just enjoying his time, thinking back to the days of his youth... like the scent of fresh lemon, you see.
