DECEMBER BOYS (2007)
December Boys is about a group of orphans who take a holiday to a beautiful beach area in Australia in the late 1960’s. There are an interesting cast of neighbors that they encounter. They learn about people and about themselves.
It stars Daniel as Maps, the oldest of the group of orphans. He is their leader and mentor. He meets an older girl who is very experienced, so Maps learns about love and life from her as well.
The adult actors in this movie are excellent. I especially like Jack Thompson, who was in
THE SUM OF US . (If you haven’t seen that, it’s a must!) There is a youngish couple who becomes interested in adopting one of the boys, which also brings about tough choices for all involved.
This was one of Dan’s first forays away from Harry Potter during those years and he does well. There is a funny scene where he attempts to sing and does it badly and his scenes with Lucy, the older girl, are well done. He is all fumbles and tries to impress without seeming silly. On a side note, Dan was already very hairy at this point as the viewer can see in some shots when he wears shorts.
It was originally a book published in 1963 and the movie is nothing like the book, which I think is okay. They added some plot points that help it along as a movie. This actually wasn’t specifically a device for Dan. He grabbed this role, when someone else dropped out, but he handled the part with ease.
It is PG-13 for sexual content, nudity, underage drinking and smoking. I give it a soft PG-13. This is tame compared to some things, as this movie is already nearly eight years old.
It’s a sweet movie. A quick watch on a lazy day. It has an excellent cast and a plot that moves nicely.
