DAVID COPPERFIELD (1999)
David Copperfield is a BBC made film from 1999 shown in two parts on television. This book by Charles Dickens has been made into numerous movies. This one is mostly faithful to the text.
It is about a boy who is able to overcome bad circumstances. From his mother’s death, to his cruel stepfather, and trying to fit into a world where being of a certain class is everything.
There are many fantastic British actors in this movie, including some of Dan’s co-stars from the Harry Potter series, such as Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton, and Zoe Wanamaker (who plays a nasty piece of work). Ian McKellen (who is nearly unrecognizable) and Bob Hoskins are also in this film. Tom Wilkinson does the terrific narration. All of the actors do a wonderful job.
The scenery and costumes are beautiful and the London of long ago is very realistic. You can feel the dirt!
Daniel plays David Copperfield at about 10 years of age and does a fine job. Especially, the scenes with his evil stepfather, he is fearful, stoic, and even rebellious. At that young age, Daniel was able to get across to the audience how the character feels. And wee little Daniel is very cute.
Daniel is in the first 90 minutes, but they did a great job finding an older boy to play David for the second part of the movie. David is then played by Ciaran McMeramin, who is a good 14 years older than Daniel and meant to be about 10 years older in the film. The voice of Ciaran especially is like Dan’s, quite soft-spoken, but confident.
It is 185 minutes long in two parts and is unrated. I would guess it would be a PG equivalent for some violence.
It’s a great movie. It’s well-worth a watch. Especially if you like British dramas and great acting!
