“Hyung, you coming along?”

Today was one of those days when Sungmin came to pick Hyuk Jae up from Sukira. Sungmin likes days like these - it was bonding time for them; something which was special to Hyuk Jae and him.

Just like this, they’ve been friends for a few years already. When Junsu made his debut first, it was Sungmin who was by Hyuk Jae’s side, comforting him, encouraging him, and just being there for him. When they debut as Super Junior together, it was also Sungmin who was there for Hyuk Jae when his sister and Junsu couldn’t be there for him. They were close like this.

“Yep, we’re riding together?” Sungmin asked in reply to Hyuk Jae’s question.

“Yeah… It’s the least I can do since you’re so nice to come pick me up from Sukira,” Hyuk Jae said with a little sarcasm in his words. They looked at each other and then laughed it off. They were obviously close to be able to laugh things off like this. It made everyone else jealous of their friendship.

Hyuk Jae was thankful - he always was, when it comes to the people who love him and how he loves. Just like this, he was thankful to God for the Sungmin hyung who’s been by his side all these years. When he graduated, he was thankful for having Sungmin hyung be there at the graduation for him. When Junsu debuted, he was thankful for having Sungmin hyung be there to debut together with him. They were family - Sungmin hyung’s family is his family and vice versa.

“So you told manager hyung we’re driving back ourselves?” Sungmin asked when they reached the car.

“Yeah, he’s fine with it. To be truthful; I can’t see why he won’t be fine with it.”

“Well, with all the past accidents, it won’t hurt to be a little careful. I don’t want you in another accident like the other time again,” Sungmin replied seriously.

Hyuk Jae laughed; it was a typical Sungmin reaction - the boy was always careful in whatever he does, total opposites to most of the other members.

“I bet I’m the only one in the group who can stand you,” Hyuk Jae teased. Sungmin didn’t quite get it at first, but Hyuk Jae’s continued laughter was kind of contagious and not very long later, Sungmin understood what Hyuk Jae was talking about.

“Yeah, that’s why we stick together all the way through!”

They both smiled as Hyuk Jae started the car engine and they started making their journey back. A little under half an hour on the road, they switched - this time Sungmin was behind the rear.

“Tired?” Sungmin asked. “You look like you need a nap - go to sleep, I’ll wake you up when we reach.”

“I thought you always asked me not to sleep on the road? You and your safety considerations?” Hyuk Jae teased once again. He knew Sungmin too well to know all these little habits of his - Sungmin seldom slept while on the road, not unless his mind was too tired to fight back the urge to sleep.

“Yeah well, but I’m here now, so you can sleep. If it was anyone else, don’t do it,” Sungmin smiled back at Hyuk Jae. He wasn’t someone who trusted others easily, and he knew Hyuk Jae was just the same, so he was glad - glad for the trust that Hyuk Jae had in him because the boy was sound asleep in 5 minutes.
Driving silently through the night on the highway, there were loads of thoughts going through Sungmin’s head. A long, long time ago, it was Hyuk Jae going the extra mile to send Sungmin home. Today, Sungmin went the extra mile to send Hyuk Jae home.

He smiled to himself.

He always believed in giving back the kindness that others showered on you. Hyuk Jae didn’t have to go the extra 30 minutes to send him home back then, but he did, and Sungmin was more than grateful for it. He was thankful, not just for the extra things that Hyuk Jae did for him, but more than that, for the faith that Hyuk Jae had in him - the trust that he would also be there for Hyuk Jae when the boy needed it.

When the car stopped at a traffic light, Sungmin took a little glance at Hyuk Jae sleeping so soundly in the car, just as if he was sleeping on his own bed. Another smile on Sungmin’s face appeared.

All these years, it was this one belief that kept them both going; that kept their friendship going stronger than anyone else in the group - it was the same belief that Hyuk Jae had right from the start.

“Just as you always believed that I would be here for you, I’ve also always believed that you’ll be here for me. Thanks, Hyuk Jae-ya, thanks for taking that first step and changing both of our lives.”
