i disagree with this decision for numerous reasons. neither the american nor the iraqi govts have the manpower to handle the jobs that these firms handle, and they're performing a service which would normally be handled by governmental employees. if they're performing the same sorts of jobs that those who retain immunity are performing, then-- ( Read more... )

maybe that if the gubbment wants to hold foreign civilians as war criminals, then maybe our civilians (who got there via no-contest bids at major taxpayer expense) should be held responsible for actions which make them war criminals?

just bc one is immune from prosecution in a specific country doesn't mean one is immune from the jdx of the hague. additionally, these contractors perform essential services that contribute to the rebuilding of the country; it's only going to slow the reconstruction if the contractors feel that the risk is greater than the reward, and pull up stakes and leave. it's not like iraq is going to be able to provide the same support that the contractors do.
