The "in private e-mail" phrase reminded me of this old tune about how you can claim all sorts of things are going on in private email, and people have been doing so ever since email was young.

huh, I just took it to be a sarcastic turnaround of the exact thing that he is saying Dennett did. One in private conversation, the other via e-mail... seemed like an obvious joke to me.
