I don't think he'd disagree with you. When he says "it's not there" all he means is that there is nothing in addition to the physical brain (i.e. nonphysical properties or substances).
If, however, we deflate our notion of consciousness to the level of neurobiology, then we can have a referential and meaningful discourse with "lots of fantastically meaningful patterns... to explore." :-)
Well that's great! :) I've been really into phil of mind for a couple of years now, and I take it that that is what you've been studying at your university? How is that going? Or are you graduated?
I just completed my undergraduate at a school in Maryland called Towson University. Now I'm studying for the GRE and plan on applying to terminal MA programs in Philosophy for next year.
If I don't get in anywhere then I plan on trying to join the Peace Corps or something; anything to stay out of the "real world" for as long as possible.
