I felt that way about the last DWJ book--felt like pretty much nothing past the first chapter or so were hers. It wasn't funny, it was silly in places, nothing quite in focus.
I didn't think it went adrift that early on, and according to Ursula Jones' notes, it was somewhere around half finished, maybe a little more than. But in the end, yes, something was askew. not in focus sounds rather like the right descriptor (Where I really knew for sure it was no longer DWJ I think was where they found a secret door in a fountain, but that was well after I had started wondering, because it had lost a lot of momentum already.)
I am half inclined to read some of Ursula Jones' own books to see what they're like when she's being herself and not trying to channel someone else. My impression is that they would be lighter fare, but have some entertainment value.
