Why are hugs and kisses written with X's and O's? What if they were represented by other letters? What other letters would they use?

I think a 'u' is much more appropriate for a hug. As for kisses ... well, I still like x. Or maybe z.

I thought o's were kisses and x's were hugs?

I guess no one ever told me for sure, but o's look like lips that are pursed to kiss something, and x's look like 2 pairs of arms hugging (a little.) I just kind of assumed.

Omg! We totally had a huge conversation about this the other night! And somehow our German teachers got in on it, which made it even worse...

Hmmm. H could be a hug, because it starts with H, and because it looks a little like two people with arms reaching towards each other. And... Ö could be the kiss, because the umlaut gives the rounded lips a bit of pucker. HÖHÖHÖ
