Mission Report #22

[From the looks of things, Squall probably intended this to be voice, but, well, he's a little preoccupied. He's sitting on the beach, and the video displays only a partial view of his booted feet on the sand, and his sheathed gunblade where he set it down next to him, and a more distant view of the ocean and the Lighthouse.] ( Read more... )

--huh?

[There's a pause, and then Squall's hand drops to the Network device, partly blocking the video.]

...figures.

How can it be about making a difference when I don't even know what the fighting's going to be about? For all I know it's some pointless thing nobody even remembers the reason for.

Um. If it helps... it doesn't have to be a big reason. I mean, I- I'm... or I was fighting for s-someone back home, in my world. But there was a bigger picture!

...I still... feel like I'm just fighting for her.

It sounds surprisingly reasonable.

Oh, most of it. To want it to be you, for a start.

[creep. creep. creeeeeeeep. Yes, that is a slight wave of sand kicked idly at your back, Squall. ]

...shut up.

[The effect is kind of like sneaking up on a cat and tweaking its tail, except that instead of getting claws spazzing in all directions, you get Squall wrenching about to grab for his gunblade only to check himself when not an attack catches up to rarr combat reflexes in his brain ( ... )

[you are lucky, Son of Wild Cat (in Questionable Heat), that this is Kanda - because he's big and loud and sometimes dumb, but he's learned to grit his teeth and hold his jaw shut, and not talk about it. To. Never. Talk about it.

He takes a sharp breath in, glancing from the man - real man, goodbye vision - 's hands, to his weapon, to those hands again. Glares at Squall's blade. ]

Won't - won't cut well.

[hesitates between staying still or moving away, finally looking up. For his own part, the curse is simple: his 'soul' is tired. He was worn out before he was ever born, he's that tired.]

[Squall hastily averts his eyes, and ends up staring fixedly at Kanda's feet for lack of any better ideas. And hesitates there in his half-crouch for a long uncomfortable interval before taking the cue from Kanda. Don't say anything. Tacitly agree to pretend nothing happened. He can do that.]

...it cuts well enough.

[He settles his weight back and gets stiffly up to his feet, carrying the gunblade with him sort of automatically.]

With which part? 'Cause I can think of a few things wrong with all of it.

About wanting to be the one they were looking for.

[Crouched on a near by rock, 'sup. He's giving Squall an unhappy look.]

Pretty bent if ya ask me.

[A cynical little half-laugh escapes Squall as he stares down at the sand in front of his feet.]

Heh. Thanks for that.

[Then he lifts his head to look over.]

[He pauses and then scratches his head sheepishly.]

You should be thankful when there's no war. There's plenty of better things to do than fight. War just leads to suffering, after all.

[Cue more staring at sand.]

It's not like I don't know that. Even though sometimes there's no choice.

[Squall sighs.]

I just feel like, if there's got to be a war, I should be the one fighting. But maybe that's not really any different from wanting it.
