This is why I don't read HP fics. Also because it's so hard to separate the even close to good ones from the drivel, but this is a big reason why most of them are drivel. It seems the fandom has way too much, "I hate this character, therefore they are evil AND SHOULD DIE!" floating around. I had the misfortune to read a DC fic like that once, where the Detective Boys were drunk delinquents who as highschoolers couldn't read. It was painful.
Honestly, I think a lot of people hate Ginny because they have crushes on Harry, and are blindly jealous. That is one of the few plausible explanations for such hatred. That and shipping. Dear god, the shipping.
I think there are some that are good, but you're right - it is so hard to tell them apart, sometimes taking a while before the drivel starts. Which is a shame, because HP has so much potential for a good story in so many ways.
I admit to hardly ever going to the DC section of FFnet any more for that exact reason. They're mostly either ones that I've read or I'm already watching the author for, or that have bad summaries, or that use the English names. Which is jarring.
Understandable, so far as fangirls can be understandable. But still. And don't tell me about the shipping... most fandoms I'm in, I like seeing this weird taboo thing called 'friendship'. It apparently does not exist for the most part, even when you put 'friendship' into the search quota. :I
Oh yes! I'm definitely floating away from the reading fanfic part of DC. Unless they land in my inbox or on my f-list, blargh. It seems to me there have been more and more uses of the English names since I've gotten involved.
*grins* The statement Harry/Hermione is almost guaranteed to come with a Ginny who makes Bellatrix Lestrange look like Gandhi. And this will naturally somehow reflect back on to the rest of the Weasleys.
Ditto. World needs more friendship fics. Apparently two people cannot hang out together without being hopelessly in love. This is, bizarrely enough, extra likely if they're the same sex. Yay fangirls. (Possibly the only reason that Marauder's Era fics do not have a marked orgy tendency is because one of the few accepted facts of HP fandom is that Peter Pettigrew is a slimeball. As it is, they still have problems.)
And that. I admit that I think that if done well enough, it could be bearable. But not if they abuse the other characters. That's not a sign of a good author, even if their technique was perfect for the rest.
Weirdly enough, the amount of fic for slash and friendship with the Doctor and the Master seems more than I'd ever thought I could read.
Not being a particularly visual thinker, I'm puzzled by your reaction to variations in Harry's appearance, especially losing his glasses. How does the change in Harry's appearance change the way you read the story?
I've seen it happen in several stories (mostly as part of a shopping-trip and/or series-of-underwhelming-revelations, which explains why Harry is going to be entirely OOC in the story) but it never really affected me.
Also, I think the fan-base for Harry Potter tends to be fairly young and so has a lot of people that think in extremes. It doesn't really register for a lot of people that Harry could be abused, but not regularly beaten and raped, or that Ginny could be a decent person, but not perfect.
Hm... It's admittedly been a while since I've tried to be in the Harry Potter fandom, but I think that a good part of it was that a lot of how people in the books see Harry includes his glasses, including how if he didn't have them on he couldn't see as clearly
