Here are a few things I've read recently and found to be interesting.

Have some anti-cynicism Violence Vanquished, an article about how there has been a historical trend toward less violence. This is well worth reading.

About the Friends in Unusual Places notalwaysright story... gotta admit, it moved me to actual tears. <3 Goes to show that awesome people do exist in this world, and it helps renew my faith in humanity, after seeing how much cynicism and asshattery pervades through it on a daily basis.

Yes, it was quite sweet. It started off with the customer seeming clueless and unreasonable, and then it was just sad. But to see people show compassion, and have it create a long-term connection to help a lonely person was really awesome. I wouldn't recommend that as a technique for making friends or getting someone to talk to, and I am surprised that it worked, but it was quite nice.
