The Wonderful World of Smogging One's Car

Mar 19, 2009 01:00

I have thoroughly enjoyed smoging my car this year! Not.  After spending an initial $89.95 (with a $20 off coupon) at a local "Test Only" station, my car failed the smog test three times.  BTW, I have a 1989 Chevy Camaro IROC-Z/Z28 5.7.  Before I took the Camaro down to the "Test Only" station, I changed the timing from 9 degrees BTDC to negative ( ( Read more... )

Problem the first: You live in California.
They are tough with their cars. We just got testing here in Texas and a year ago I had the same thing with a 1989 Oldsmobile I had. Do you know how hard it is to get a 307 Olds with a carb to blow clean? I told the tester "You know when it passes, I could drive it about the block and it would fail." And he said "Yeah I know."
Now I just found somewhere to buy a sticker ;)

My parents used to have a 1985 Oldsmobile 88 Custom Cruiser station wagon with a 307 V8 also. My parents older station wagon, a 1975 Dodge Monaco with a 400 V8 and A727 tranny was much more fun to drive. It was fun lighting up the tires in that car back when I was in high school! I remember, I could get those white wall tires to roast quite well. Hehe The car from the front end, looked just like the the "Blues Brother's" police sedan.

Mine was a 89 Custom Cruiser. That 307 was WAY underpowered. It sucked. Nice car though.

True, living in california does give us some pretty stoopid emissions laws. Which is why i drive a honda. Cheap, reliable, good mpg, though it may not be as fun as some of the cars y'all drive, it's a good daily driver. I'm beginning to thing that it would have been cheaper to have just done this under the table and pay $200 to have someone pass your car without even looking at it...

If your EGR is going out, you will see NOx going up. Main function of EGR is to cool the combustion event, once it goes past, I think it was 2500 degrees, NOx shoots way up and the Cat struggles to bring it down.

Thanks. I do have K & N air filters. I cleaned them out a couple months ago. I put all new fuel injectors in about two years ago. Spark plugs have about 28k miles on them. Cap and rotor and Taylor spark plug wires are two years old. I cleaned out the throttle body recently, also. A couple days ago I put in some CRC "Guaranteed To Pass" fuel system cleaner. The cat was the problem. Although, the new cat they put on is defective. They should be getting another one on tonight. I'll cross my paws that everything goes well!

I heard today from a technician that it is wise to see if the EGR is working by driving the car with a vaccuum guage hooked up to it. Also, cleaning out the PCV hose with "Berryman Carb Cleaner". Run the engine at 1100 RPM and spray it into the hose a little bit at a time. (The car may stall.) Then, when the can is about 1/4 full, submerge the hose in a flask of carb cleaner until the engine dies. Then start the car, it will blow tons of smoke, then drive it for 10 minutes. This will clean the carbon off the valves, pistons, and PCV hose.
