two posts in one night?!

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately, especially about our country, and the path that it is going down since the recent elections. I have decided I need to get more involved. And one of those ways would be for me to enlist in the Armed Services. It isn't something I would particularly relish, or really WANT to do, due to the risks involved ( Read more... )

I think it's a good idea. Most guys should serve in the military at some point (this coming from an air force brat).

That's ok. You're allowed to. I feel that military service helps people understand how lucky we are and that we take so much for granted (not that I necessarily think Joe is ignorant of those things, but it doesn't hurt anyone to be reminded). Growing up in that sort of environment has really shaped my view of the world, and I have applied to teach on overseas military bases. And, though the risks in Iraq are great (and I understand this), serving one's country is never a bad thing.

"servings one's country is never a bad thing"

one thing comes to mind. German death squads. they were serving their country, doing the will of their leader. I'm not necessarily saying that the US military is remotely conducting itself in a similar fashion, but the point is that logic is flawed. serving ones country does not necessitate going to iraq and killing iraqis or others deemed "enemy combatants". the purpose of the military, in my mind (at least partially), is to defend against and respond to attacks of its respective nation, or allies. it is a very different thought pattern to believe that the job of one nations military is to rout potential threats out of sovereign nations. there is more to this, but, i'm lazy. also, joe would make the worlds worst soldier. Ze uppa bodie, es lacking ze muscles. if he could run a mile under 7 minutes without stopping and then do 30 proper push ups continuously, i'll eat my keyboard.

I am not saying I would be the best soldier, but at the same time, I don't think I would necessarily be the worst. With the proper work out, etc., I could get into shape, which I would do if I were to enlist. ON top of which, if I did enlist, things like boot camp are in place to whip people like me into shape so I wouldn't be the world's worst soldier. As for serving one's country never being a bad thing, I have to agree with Brendi on this one ( ... )

Joe, let me start out by saying that I'm more than a little surprised that you're thinking about going into the armed forces. I'll admit that I don't know you all that well but, unless I'm mistaken, this is kind of a new direction for you. With that in mind I thought it might be appropriate for me to comment on your post. First of all, I don't think it would be a good idea for you, or anyone else, to join up if you don't want to be in the military. I understand the feeling of an obligation based on duty, however, there are routes open outside of the military to serve the country. This is part of the reason why I don't feel everyone should be forced to serve, I appreciate the concept of wanting to know what it is to be in the military before trying to effect policy decisions concerning the military but, in the same vein, I don't think people have to be doctors to have an opinion on health-care. Plus, if you don't like the kind of stuff the military does (I'm referring to working all day in the woods and flopping down to sleep in ( ... )
