Well, the family is a socialist unit. Some tend towards hierarchy and central planning, others tend towards anarcho-socialism, but 'to each according to their needs' is at least an approximation of the ideal of most, not that we don't fight over the implementation of the ideal.
Come to think of it, almost any flavour of socialism can be thought of as an attempt to view the polity as an extended family. The anarcho-socialist believes that we would all be one big, happy family, if only we would give up all forms of exploiting each other, beginning with the profit motive and the state will to power. For the more traditional socialist, the state is the strong parental figure who sets, and modifies as seems appropriate, the rules the family must live by in order to live well together.
I am not a (democratic) socialist, because if the populace really are children who need an authoritative parent to help them live well together, then recruiting that parent from among the children, according to the values of the children, seems a recipe for exacerbating rather than ameliorating the children's shortcomings.
heh heh, i did in fact sit down and lecture briana on the finer points of the history and benefits of socialism -- in all it's varieties and forms.
really, i don't know enough about the finer points of socialism to know why i am categorized that way... you know, just one of those internet tests. i'm into the idea of sharing as equally as possible, universal health care (understanding its does have shortcomings), that if i make more i am willing to pay more, and the like. so whatever part of socialism and communism that is, i resonate with that. i just don't think it'll ever work -- it feels like such a naive system in a greedy world.
maybe jesus would say i have good ideals and hugely lack faith?
