My Grandma George was from Spokane. I visited there a few times as a child and teen. I'm more familiar with the western side of the state, though (I live in Olympia). The eastern side of the state is more conservative, but with Spokane being such a huge city, I'm sure you would be able to find LGBT resources and such. :)
yea id love to live there one of my best friends lives in Olympia and of my fave bands of all time and other good friends live on that side of the state. but i cannot have that little of sun
plus my wifes family lives in Boise too so thats a happy medium for us both :)
Olympia is close enough for a drive if you want to come out to see your friend and for concerts and the like (or a short flight, if you can find one for cheap). My folks used to make that trip a lot.
Oddly, I have less SAD here than when I lived in Texas and Massachusetts. It's weird! Then again, I grew up here and I suppose my body is somewhat used to the climate. LOL, my married partner has migraines and constant light sensitivity, so when we moved back out here (aside from a 3mo stay in Ohio, they had always lived in MA or Rhode Island) one of the first things they said was, "OMG! No sun! I LOVE THIS." XD
I wish I knew more to be able to give you suggestions, but the most of my knowledge about Spokane at this point is that Worldcon (major Science Fiction convention) will be there in 2015. *lol*

I actually love that area, lots of great hiking there and just across the boarder in Idaho. Fishing too!
Hope it goes really well for you both.
