The Hobbit: Now three movies so we had to add some stuff that we made up

Dec 15, 2012 21:07

Saw The Hobbit. Mostly it was fun, but you can really sense the padding in some scenes...there was one in Rivendell which not only served no purpose but was basically there to reassure us that, yes, the Elves are upper class wankers and the Dwarfs prefer meat and potatoes to salad. ( Cut for spoilers for scenes that aren't in the book )

My Tolkien geek husband, who gave up movie theaters five or so years ago in protest again high ticket prices in NYC, has promised to see this in a theater with me. We've already moved the date from yesterday to next Saturday, but dammit, I am just looking forward to having a movie date for once.

For all that it's not really in the spirit of the Hobbit, it's a really fun fantasy film.

I prefer to think of The Hobbit elves as hipsters - with their salad obsession, lutes, and elk riding.

Hee! The elk riding was awesome. It made the whole 'Well, we're just here to look pretty - I hope you don't expect us to fight' scene even more galling. YOU CAN RIDE ELK, ELVES, I BET YOU COULD AT LEAST TRY FIGHT A DRAGON.
