I am have been chosen to play Thenardier in a local non profesional production in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. How does he see a hint of gold stuck into a tooth in the sewers?

Sewers have openings... he was probably just in a good spot to see a reflection.

I always assumed he just searched the bodies, including their teeth for fillings.

Some people don't get the point. He is in the sewers. It's dark. To see gold in a tooth you have to have some light. Yes there were openings in the sewers. But to get into the sewers he would have to find an out of the way opening or go in at night.
