Wow. You packed this with so much emotion. You made Snape vulnerable without changing him. The ending was perfectly bittersweet. I enjoyed this very much.

What a gorgeous, painful story. Everything about it is nuanced and just right. I especially liked these parts:

“I can’t do this Severus. I told you before, you’ve chosen your path, and I’ve chosen mine. Maybe one day our paths will cross again, but not now, not until you get on the right path.”

“The right path?” anger tinged his voice, “and what would the right path be? Yours? Potter’s?”

“There is no need to bring James into this.”

“Oh, its James now, is it? What happened to toerag?”

Lily looked confused.

“You bloody Gryffindors, always acting so damn self-righteous. You think you know your so-called friends? I could tell you a… “

“As opposed to your friends?” She cut him off. “I’ll take what you seem to think I don’t know about my friends any day over what you probably do know about yours.” She was yelling now. “Ugh! Nothing’s changed. This is what I swore I wouldn’t do. I do not have to justify my friends to you, especially with the company you keep.”

That last scene was really brutal. When Severus said, "I thought you knew," I felt a wave of pain wash over me. The dissolution of his relationship with Lily suddenly seemed to make so much sense. On top of everything, he must have felt so rejected by her when she refused to forgive him. Wow, what perfect canon. Thank you for this.

Thank you so much! This is very nicely written. I really love your description, particularly this: "A grey mist clung to the air like cobwebs on branches, thick and oppressive with smoke billowing up from the factory. The only noticeable change in seasons that Severus could remember was the rise and fall of the temperature and whether or not the ground was icy.

I really love the introduction, it makes good sense. And the description of the party with James and Sirius - ha, that made me laugh.

I like how you did this - there isn't a forced reconciliation scene, just a bittersweet one that's all the more poignant because you just get a hint of how things could have gone otherwise.

Thank you again!
