TV-recs! Since a lot of people will have some free time next month (Christmas, new year's), I figured this would be a good time to rec some entertainment.
• If you like Sherlock (BBC, 2010) you'd probably like Jekyll (BBC, 2007).
Mr. Hyde: Ever killed anyone, Benjamin?
Benjamin: Not personally. I have people.
Mr. Hyde: You're missing out! It's like sex, only there's a winner.
Before Stephen Moffat wrote a modern-day retelling of the Sherlock Holmes books, he wrote a modern-day retelling of the book Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And it was awesome.
The mood of Jekyll is very similar to that of Sherlock, it's exciting and gripping and suspenseful and all that, it's got some funny lines and a main character that can be kind of a dick, and they're both short series. Even the names of the shows are similar!
The cast is pretty great: James Nesbitt, Gina Bellman, Michelle Ryan (from Merlin!).

Why you should watch: great acting, great writing, plenty of fun scenes and plot twists.
• If you like The Walking Dead (AMC, 2010) you'd probably like Dead Set (E4, 2008).
Dead Set is, like The Walking Dead, a show about a group of survivors after the zombie apocalypse.
The premise is pretty hilarious: when the zombie apocalypse starts, one group of people are completely cut-off from the surrounding world and neither aware nor in danger from the zombies outside (weeell, at least not initially): the participants in the popular docuseries Big Brother.
Yes, really. It's about a bunch of annoying Big Brother contestants, together with a bad-ass tv-production-worker named Kelly, fighting to stay alive in the zombie apocalypse. That is, when they're not busy dealing with the epic personal drama resulting from being a group of people hand-picked for the show because of their non-compatible personalities.
"Does this mean we're not on telly anymore?" Why you should watch it: Zombies. Zombies vs. Big Brother contestants. And Kelly is Made of Awesome.
• If you like Glee (Fox, 2009) you'd probably like Hellcats (CW, 2010).
It's basically the same show, except with cheerleading instead of singing.
The budget at the college the cheerleaders go to have been moved around and given mostly to the football players. The cheerleaders in the cheerleading group Hellcats needs to win first place at the next national cheerleading competition, or else their funding will be cut even more and all the cheerleaders will lose their scholarships. Oh noes! Cue various cheerleading numbers as they compete their way to the nationals.

Why you should watch it: it's pretty fun!
• If you like Doctor Who (BBC, 1963) or Stargate SG-1 (Syfy, 1997) you'd probably like Farscape (Nine Network, 1999).
Fun, silly, wonderful, gripping sci-fi shows about groups of friends who have space adventures together. Why WOULDN'T you like it?
Seriously, just watch it. I haven't watched all of it yet (I'm on season two), but so far it's been lovely.
First episode is kinda boring, though.

Why you should watch it: some of the main characters are played by CLAUDIA BLACK, BEN BROWDER and MUPPETS. Well, dolls, anyway. Dolls. MUPPET-LIKE DOLLS ... AS MAIN CHARACTERS!
