Life after Death

It seems very likely that eventually, millions of years from now, science will be so advanced that it will be possible to gather very specific information about the very distant past.

Assuming there's no element of true "randomness" to the universe at any level (I'm pretty sure the jury's still out on that) it's theoretically possible for an ( Read more... )

I can't say one way or the other but, even with the recreation of your brain, wouldn't that be more like creating a clone? It looks like you, walks like you, talks like you, maybe even thinks it is you, but it's not you. Take replicants from Blade Runner as an example.

And if you want to get into souls or whatnot, why would it have to be the same one that inhabited your original body? The remade body could just be a new shell for any soul to take up residence.

I guess you could go back to the Star Trek transporter theory with thousands of duplicate Spocks in Hell.

Any idea what happened to that drawing? XD

The whole "personal continuity" question is definitely tricky. I don't think anyone who believes in "souls" and assumes that the soul leaves the body when you die would agree with me on this.

I think consciousness and the mind can be explained entirely in terms of a physical process. So the question is, does the process have to be constant? How does a gap affect it? When I mentioned in my post that I'm trying to dig deeper, basically what I'm trying to figure out is whether time is a constant flow, or if it's divisible at some tiny level into separate static increments like the frames in a film. So far I think it's the latter. Which would mean that there are already tiny "gaps" in our consciousness, so there's no reason to think that a much larger "gap" would affect us any differently.

So you could say that I don't believe in the Star Trek thing with the Spocks in Hell, heck I don't even believe in Hell, I just find it highly amusing. I have no idea what happened to the drawing, I think I gave it to someone.
