Isn't poetry complex and confusing by nature? I would dare argue that poetry cannot be defined or confined into one true meaning. A poem means something different to everyone and trying to stick one purpose/meaning to a poem is oversimplifying it. I mean unless your poem starts "There once was a man from Nantucket" then I would allow the reader to interpret what they want from the work.

I completely understand where you are coming from. I agree with you. Poetry can be really confusing by nature, which is why hundreds of years after a poet dies people are still guessing and trying to figure out what the poet meant by certain lines. This is why I've always tried to be as forthcoming as possible in my poetry because I want it to be as not open to interpretation as possible. My poetry usually takes complex ideas or concepts and explains them in a beautifully simple way. I'm sure that they could mean something different to other people than they do to me, but I would hope that the original meaning wouldn't be hard to find. Who knows, maybe my perception is flawed because I wrote it and I know what I was trying to say.
