It's a relatively new thing, to 'offset costs' or w/e.
Most airlines now charge $15-25 for the first checked bag, whereas the first bag used to be free & they only charged for the second (I dunno how long ago it was you could check two for free), but there is always the carry-on (small as it may be).
Before I went on my vacations part of my research was on the best way to pack, & I can across a few things that detailed how to go for however many days with only what you can fit in your carry-on (say, the smallest of those rolling suitcases) - personally I think those people are nuts, but...
Hmm, that reminds me, I read about a website that lists costs charged by airlines - say, for food, drinks, luggage, headphones, etc...I should look for it again, it was interesting!
