Were the judges primarily Christian Republican/ultra-Conservatives? If so, there's stuff they regard as far more important than the original spirit of the Constitution - including some serious revisionist history of it!
But, if you're going to go on a stabbing spree anyway, would you like a light-saber or pointy sharp-edged weapon? For any clerical/engineer types I have a blunt spanner instead. ;-)
PS The feeling over at Pharyngula seems to be that it's a very good sign the judges didn't agree to render existing marriages invalid. So they suspect, with the help of that foothold (and ongoing changes in public opinion), proposition 8 will be overturned at the next voting opportunity.
The problem last time was that the sort of people being gathered up to vote for Obama also overlapped a lot with those who are traditionally (religiously!) homophobic. In a more apathetic voting scenario, those people wouldn't be turning up at all; so the concurrent vote on prop.8 wouldn't have been afflicted with them as a side-effect.
