Even when 'difficult past few months' is a reigning understatement, Tony still couldn't shake the suspicion he may or may not get slapped. And maybe it was paranoia, but with his behavior over these 'difficult past few months', maybe it was justified. Maybe that temptation to have Pepper grab an umpire's mask and one of those sumo suits for him to ( Read more... )

The second Tony gave his excuse, Laura opened her mouth to point out that their relationship was so far from perfect that she didn't think it was fair of him to mention it. He hadn't been the perfect friend. He wasn't the perfect boyfriend. If they ever got around to it, she just knew that he wasn't going to be the perfect husband.

To be fair, she wasn't perfect either. She worked all the time, obsessed over the possibility of him getting hurt, and demanded more of him than what he was used to giving. He knew she would. And to cover up how close he had come to dying, and everything else that had happened over the past couple of months was something he couldn't expect her to let go of very easily.

Which was good, because she wouldn't.

"Do you have any idea what you put me through? Perfect? Who said anything about perfect? I'd settle for you caring enough to tell me when you're having health problems and warning me before you make an ass out of yourself in front of everyone you care about ( ... )

Tony took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. Well, the door hadn't closed. It was constantly on the verge of closing, but it hadn't closed. That, he supposed, was the important part.

The other part was what to say next that didn't involve blurting out something else retarded. And that was taking him a minute.

Hm.

"Alright. Let's start with the easy part." He attempted to say smoothly. "One, I tried. Granted, I was losing my mind a little at the time, and my judgment was kind of skewered by the very real possibility I had a week left to live and a lot of alcohol, but..." But.

"But y'know, under the circumstances, I thought I did pretty well." Okay, maybe not. "... Sort of. And why would I tell you that when you're always terrified I'm going to die out there?" The look on her face in those situations was bad enough. Amplify that by ten, and he just hadn't been able to do it.

"I was looking for the answer, Laura. I didn't want you to know, anyone to know, because there was nothing anyone could do about it. It was something I had ( ... )

"You know what I can hate you for?" Laura offered, just daring him to listen to it. She was right, she knew it, and she was going to say it before he piled on more excuses. "For solving problems like a bachelor. How long have we been together now, Tony? And how long before you start treating me like your partner, instead of some woman who has the audacity to worry about you when you're doing something dangerous?"

He looked at that as a problem more than anything else. She knew that without him saying it, and she would never be able to understand it.

"When it's important, I don't know about it until it's over. Nevermind the fact that you're incapable of dealing with anything without going off the deep end. Is this how it's always going to be? ...Is this really what you want for the rest of your life?" Not only did Laura hate it, she also doubted that she could manage it long-term. She was already tired of it.

It was the ending that made him cringe. It didn't exactly bode well for keeping Laura off the ever expanding list of Tony Stark's Ex Girlfriends. His shoulders sagged some, and the drop in defenses let the guilt flow over and take control.

"Alright." He relented in a quieter, even tone. One that frustrated the hell out of him, made him think of the little black box that was sitting in his desk in Malibu. The one that was more than owed. But he had to fix this first.

"You remember S.H.I.E.L.D.? And the Avengers Initiative? They're not exactly ready for me yet, so I'm a consultant." Tony wasn't about to admit that it was only partly that, Fury clearly thought he wasn't ready for them. "Officially ( ... )
