Now Mesa and Rob are gone?! What are we doing?!?! I personally LOVED Mack, and was very neutral on Mesa, but we just lost both of them! Mesa, I can see why, but come on, why Mack?! WHY?!

I couldnt agree more, I never really liked Mesa, but I knew he was good but last season I cringed everytime he was brought in. But Mackowiak on the other hand, I loved him too. He's my mom's favorite player wasnt an easy phone call to break the news that he was traded. He could do basically everything and do it well. But what gets me is that Littlefield is saying that we need a right fielder and a third baseman. Mack was both of those in one and I think did a great job.

As soon as my roommates heard a stream of obsenities come out of my mouth they knew it had something to do about the pirates. After almost 4 years of roomming together they know.

the only thing im def happy about is getting rid of Ty. That was one I hated. Not just because we got rid of Kris Benson *my all time fav player* for that thing.....

Eh I do gotta agree with you on Wigginton. I wasn't a big fan of him, and wasn't too pleased with how he played.

Hell, Im still pissed we got rid of Kendall a few seasons ago! He was, by far, my favorite Bucco ever. EVER.

But I just don't like the league in general; all the teams are getting flipped around: us, Blue Jays, Marlins, everyone.... it's gonna be an all new league next year, lemme tell ya.

You guys are complaining about getting rid of players that can easily be replaced ( ... )

I agree with you on everything, but I don't think he was moved because of payroll. I think they could have gotten a better player for Rob Mackowiak. Definitely if they would have put him in a package deal with Kip Wells to get a better hitting right fielder or third baseman.

But God Bless Dave Littlefield for finding suckers like the Royals to take all of Mark Redman's salary.

I could see the package deal happening, but those things are easier said than done.

Also, I'm not saying that payroll problems dictated Mackowiak leaving...he's not expensive at all. The Pirates obviously think Damaso Marte can help in the bullpen or they wouldn't have made the deal.

Good thoughts, though.

i, too, was torn up about the loss of mackowiak. as others have said, he had grit, he had a good personality, and he will forever live in pittsburgh lore because of the night his son was born. but he was nothing more than a bench player, really, and he certainly wasn't a permanent solution at 3rd base.

as far as mesa is concerned, his fate was pretty much sealed by the time he was removed as closer. they offered him no money at the deadline, so he's gone. his good season with us in 2004 was really a fluke; as far as closing, he's done, and even the rockies seem to think so. let him blow their games. we'll trot out torres/gonzalez.

really, though, i'm much more torn up about the anticipated loss of craig wilson. since freddy is the only guy left who can play 3rd and he is obviously not a third baseman, we'll be looking for someone to play third. and a right fielder has consistently been on dl's wish list, so i think we'll be losing our silly right fielder with the luscious blonde locks.
