Ya know what? I have some time, I'm kinda just sittin' around the house right now waiting for Collin to get here. Why not update?! What a SPECTACULAR day it was today! Man, on days like today, nothing really can go wrong. I mean, there were some bumps in the road, but such things are terribly easy to overlook when God is constantly looking over us ( Read more... )

my parents go a letter in the mail from crossroads saying that they should think about arranged marriages for thier students. Creepy/cult-ish, and logically flawed, in my opinion.

lol, we're not gonna get in a debate about this one. No, this was not an idea implanted into my mind from Crossroads. As a matter of fact I have never even heard the phrase "arranged marriage" at Crossroads unless I'm the one who mentioned it. I hardly believe that the church is sending out letters in the mail supporting it (kinda a waste of money that is terribly unproductive), unless that one sentance was taken entirely out of context. Not to mention you are pointing fingers without hearing the other side of the story. But I must know, how is an arranged marriage cult-ish??

No they really did, towards the begining of fall semester, they showed it to me when I came home one weekend. The letter didnt say corssroads supported it, they just said to consider it becuase in other countries that use the 'arranged marraige' system, there is a really low divorce rate (although, no one thinks about the fact that if you get a divorce in one of those countries you end up being a social outcast or even killed). It would be really dumb to marry someone that your parents hate, but it would be equally as stupid to marry someone just becuase your parents like them. Cult probably wasnt the right word, how about just plain weird to hear something so outdated.

heh heh, I don't know how we get into these, umm... discussions? Here's the deal, the whole concept of arranged marriages is not outdated. It has just been eliminated from our "Please me now" society and our egocentric culture where "everything is about me" in the United States. I'm sure should you look up the percentages, arranged marriages are a normality in a grand majority of the world. Isn't it somewhat ethnocentric to believe that they are "weird" and "outdated"? Not to mention arranged marriages, especially in modern times, isn't focused on the parents exclusively choosing their children's spouse. The whole concept is now more established around the son finding a fitting bride out of a group that the parents pick for them. (There are many other variations, but thats just one) Also, I have read many essays about people in such situations who like that concept because then it's not a situation of me finding someone to fit my needs. Instead, people actually learn how to love someone else that isn't gorgeous or good in bed. Such ( ... )
