Jonghyun opens his mouth to say, we’re Koreans, not barbarians; of course we need rice.
They’re sitting in the living room, watching Minho repeatedly kick Jonghyun’s ass in FIFA, when Jinki sniffs the air and asks, “Is something burning?”
“Shit,” Kibum curses, dashing into the kitchen. After a long, ominous pause, there is a loud wail of despair.
Jinki trips over his feet in his haste to Kibum’s side and runs into the kitchen table. He curses loudly and jumps back, consequently knocking into Jonghyun and elbowing him in the gut.
“Shit, do you even eat?!” Jonghyun hisses, clutching his aching stomach. “Your elbows are all bone!” He is ignored in favor of Kibum, who is crouched on the floor with his head in his hands. Above him, a trail of black steam rises from the rice cooker.
After a long moment of frantic pointing and dark, pointed looks from Minho, Taemin is elected to speak to him, which is a good decision considering the rest of them really don’t stand a chance against Kibum’s rage of doom.
“Key-hyung,” Taemin says nervously. “Are you okay?”
Kibum looks up with teary eyes. “Taemin-ah,” he whines. “Taemin-ah, I just wanted to make some rice!”
Jinki stumbles his way over to Kibum and tentatively wraps his arms around him. “It’s totally okay!” Jinki says loudly. “I don’t even really like rice! We don’t need rice! Right, guys?”
Jonghyun opens his mouth to say, we’re Koreans, not barbarians; of course we need rice, but Minho elbows him again and says, “Of course not, hyung. We can order out.”
Kibum makes a weird, dying cat noise in his throat and nods. “I just really wanted to make you guys rice,” he says sadly.
Taemin crouches down and smiles at Kibum in a way he knows Kibum can’t resist. “We can learn together, hyung!”
Kibum makes another strangled noise and clings fiercely onto Taemin. “You’re the best son ever!” he cries.
In later years, Kibum will finally learn to make rice. Many, many years later.
