Kibum was fourteen when he first fell in love. Jonghyun was the new kid next door, all charming smiles and bright laughter. In a way, he was an idol to Kibum, who hadn’t entered high school just yet and was unfamiliar with the way older boys acted.
Jonghyun was only two years older, but age had never meant less to Kibum before. He’d been immediately ensnared by Jonghyun’s charm, and Jonghyun took it all in stride.
It was less of a conventional friendship than it was a following, which Jonghyun didn’t really mind. He enjoyed the attention, and he actually kind of liked Kibum in a brotherly sort of way.
It was only a year later that Kibum confessed his affections, and though Jonghyun expected it, he still dreaded it. They were friends, and he didn’t want to ruin that over some crush. Kibum didn’t see it in the same way, and their friendship quickly crumbled under what little foundation it had.
Kibum had to avoid Jonghyun in the mornings and after school and on the weekends because he was much too embarrassed and humiliated to approach Jonghyun, who really just wanted his friend back.
Several weeks later, Jonghyun’s father was promoted, and he moved away. Part of Kibum was relieved and the other part ached to see him and apologize.
He never saw Jonghyun again, but he never forgot him.
