You forget that livejournal is an avenue through which one can keep in touch with old friends who aren't as available to one as they were before. My best friends--I want to know what's going on with them. I'm a misereable correspondent, and e-mails just don't cut it for me, so LJ is both convenient and cathartic for everyone involved.
I want my friends to know what I'm up to, and I want to know what they're doing as well. And I have no qualms with writing about people who read my livejournal, because if I'm annoyed with them, they probably already know it. While your rant probably applies to you perfectly, keep in mind that it's not the case for everyone.
