Thoughts on the Untitled J.J. Abrams Project

Ok, Kerry, you asked for it!

For those of you who saw Transformers, you probably noticed an unusual
trailer which was completely untitled and does not reveal what the
movie is actually about. For those of you who did not see it, just
look up the trailer. (Or just click here. Now, that you're seen it, pretty freaky, eh? Well, this post will not ( Read more... )

Have you ever read about the internet ad-campaign for AI (the movie with Haley Joel Osment)? These kinds of ad-campaigns can get pretty complicated and involved with their clues and puzzles and such. The simplest explanations are not necessarily the right ones in this case.

I didn't even know there was a massive internet campaign for that movie. What happened?

Check out cloudmakers.org. I stumbled across it a couple months ago, and was fascinated by the whole thing.

Wow, you're right, these things can get complicated! Looking at AI, though, it seem s to me that all these websites did was deepen one's understand of the world that the movie takes place in. They don't actually reveal the plot of the movie very easily. (Which also makes me think that we're not going to get far with the JJ Abrams project.) It's funny how much I like AI and how much time I spent on the internet when it was released, but I never knew about this ad campaign. Thanks for the info.

Your post really highlights how much movie nerds out there love trying to decipher cryptic trailers! The monster reminds me of the one in "Lost", but thats just about all I have to go on right now. I'm glad you shed some light ont he Cthulu/Voltron/Godzilla theories with your research, since I would be sorely disappointed if it were any of those three things.

P.S. Transformers was good.

Yeah, it's funny how everyone outside the people I went to see it with are saying how good it was yet everyone I saw it with really didn't like it. (Except Chewy, who loved it.)

Well, to be fair, I think I explained my points at the dinner table following the movie. My biggest problems were the dialogue and the sheer blatantness of the "And now we will throw movie stereotypes and dumb jokes at you! Go ( ... )

Really. How come I didn't know that there was an HP Lovecraft inspired movie coming out this year? Not that I disagree with your assessment of its potential.

I had read a while ago that a "At the Mountains of Madness" movie was being produced, but haven't read anything since then. It's not Cthulu in the movie; it's not Godzilla, not after that infamous bomb from several summers ago. And if it was Voltron, they would have told us that it was Voltron; that would be promoted like Transformers was, and film geeks across the 'Net would know that such a film was being made. It might be "The Mist," which is based on a Stephen King short story, but I doubt that. I don't know what is in that trailer, and while this movie may be interesting, it may also be a crushing disappointment. (Look at how many times we've been let down since the summer of '99.)

"At the Mountains of Madness", huh? I'm curious as to how they're going to try to graft a plot onto that. It's a great read, don't get me wrong, but visually about 75% of it boils down to a couple guys walking through a ruined alien city and looking at stuff.

So it would be Stargate without explosions or morphing head special effects?

Oh, the special effects would be awesome, but they would only take up about five minutes total, if they remain true to the source material.

I'm also curious about how they plan to insert the requisite hollywood-style romantic subplot into an archaeological expedition to Antarctica.
