They started off that ruddy dark colour, stark against his skin - even more so against the sharp white sheets. Up his neck and covering one side of his face. Impossible to hide, even if he'd tried. Eliot hadn't tried to hide the bruises though, he'd just laid there. Just like he had when Parker had reached him, and when Hardison had complained in his ear and when Sophie and Nate had finally pulled up alongside where it had happened. Eliot hadn't gotten up.
The next day the stark red had darkened and spread, deep heavy purpling bruises that the doctors said they 'didn't like the look of' - like that meant anything. Not so much swelling - really they'd seen him in much worse a way before now. But not so still. Eliot was never so still.
The next day, he stirred for the first time. The bruises were purple and green and he worked his jaw carefully before even trying to speak. Like he knew before he was even fully conscious that this was going to hurt. Within an hour he had made it completely clear with an absolute minimum of words that he was not planning on staying in the hospital and no power on earth was going to keep him there.
Parker poked him in the cheek and he almost passed out in the corridor. Hardison put out a security alert on him, and suddenly he was hand-cuffed to the bed. Sophie just shrugged, and Nate smiled. He would have said things he didn't mean about hating them all, but it would have required him to speak and that hurt a lot right now, so he just glared.
They let him home the day after that, when Hardison finally got them to realise that the security alert had been a case of mistaken identity. His face was a blotched yellow and green and his eyes were puffy from lack of sleep. He raised an eyebrow at himself in the mirror and picked a shirt to draw the eye away from the ugly bruising.
One of these days he was going to get used to looking like an impressionist painting after every fight. At least he healed fast.
