[series]: Tales of Vesperia
[character]: Yeager
[character history / background]:
The World of Vesperia is one divided. One side is the Empire with its Imperial Knights commanded by the Commandant Alexei. Those who wish not to join the Empire strike out on their own creating Guilds. Guilds are groups of individuals who only obey the laws they set before themselves. However, the larger group of Guilds have come together under a Union lead by Don Whitehorse. Despite what faction people may be in, monsters roam the land. Only Blastia, magical artifacts of ancient civilizations, have the power to create barriers to hold them at bay.
Yeager is the head and mastermind behind the guild Leviathan's Claw. The guild is known for its weapons trade and selling of a certain type of blastia. Yeager and his men are first seen at Heliord talking to Cumore, one of the Imperial Knights. Workers were going missing from the fort, and it seemed that these two were responsible. Upon being found out, Yeager's men are defeated by Yuri and his group as Flynn arrives with his knights. Yeager fled the scene with the help of his two girls, Gauche and Droit.
Yeager is next seen in Nordipolica under the guise of Regaey (Yeager spelled backwards) who is the head of Ruins' Gate, a guild that specializes in the excavation of blastia. Regaey is a meek and stuttering man. He requested a meeting with the protagonists in private saying he wanted them to stop a man trying to take over the Palestralle and the Coliseum. He convinced them to fight the champion of the Coliseum who is the mastermind behind the plan. However, as Yuri reached the finals, the champion was none other than Flynn. It was a set up. In the commotion that followed, an assassin and monsters attacked the arena and its bystanders. In the confusion, Regaey stole a box containing an apethia, which are the remains after the death of a powerful creature known as an Entelexia. The heroes managed to chase him down and get the item back. In the process, Yeager revealed his true identity before escaping yet again.
Obtaining the apethia was only part of the plan, however. Yeager had fed false information to Harry, the Don's grandson. The Don was leader of the Union of Guilds. Harry came to Nordipolica at the time when the mess was in full swing. At the end, Nordipolica's leader was killed, and war was imminent between the guilds. The Don figured this out and went to Yeager's house, the Mansion of the Wicked, to confront and kill him directly for his transgression. Yeager was able to escape before the Don and Yuri and friends, who came later, are able to defeat him as the Don has other matters to attend to.
The next day, the Don gave his life as atonement for the death of Nordopolica's leader. Yeager came to pay his respects stating that he was also going to miss the Don. On a personal level, the death had affected him as well.
Yeager does not make an appearance again until after Estelle is captured by Alexei who plans to use her power in some mad scheme. Yeager stopped the assassin from being a pest to Yuri stating that Estelle isn't there as they had thought. He claimed the reasoning for his actions is that if the Empire gets too large, he wouldn't have any business.
The final time Yeager is seen is in the Shrine of Zaude. He had been ordered by Alexei to keep the heroes at bay. However, he came by himself to fight them rather than bringing his guild which he had always brought for previous battles. During the battle, it is revealed he also has a Hermes Blastia keeping him alive, which means that at some point he had died. It is never revealed when or where his first death occurred. He died at the end of the battle, and his two girls, Gauche and Droit watch the scene and move on.
It is later revealed that the two girls are Yeager's adopted daughters. He took them from an orphanage and was sending part of the funds from Leviathan's Claw to fund it.
[character abilities]:
Yeager's weapon is part scythe, part shotgun and part crossbow. One would think it unwieldy, but it allows his the advantage of both close and long range attacks. He is quick on his feet, but has no magic spells in his arsenal. However, he does have Artes (weapon skills) for both his scythe and long range abilities. His Mystic Arte is known as the Caress of Death that knocks opponents back with the scythe part of the weapon before launching a powerful attack.
Yeager is also a convincing actor. He played the role of the head of the Guild of Ruins' Gate - a meek man who stuttered and oversaw the work of the blastia excavation personally. It seemed that under this guise he had gained the respect of the other guilds for his scholarly work.
[character personality]:
Yeager is a man who separates his professional life from his personal life. The guild he leads is a glorified mercenary band at best. They trade in weapons, follow clients wills to start conflicts between other guilds, and in general throw morality out the window when completing a task. Jobs are nothing personal. Business is business, and Yeager will complete any task his guild takes on for that is the law of the guild. It is how they build their reputation.
However, this doesn't mean that he doesn't recognizes the consequences of his actions. While guilt is too strong of a word, he knows the results that will come of certain actions, and sometimes these outcomes are less than ideal. One example was the events that lead up to the Don's death. He respected the man and even came to bring flowers to his funeral. His passing was a loss despite the fact that he played a key roll in that death.
Despite his line of work, Yeager is generally a cheerful person or perhaps cocky is a better word. He is confident in his abilities and has a polite word to say to his employers such as 'yes, milord' in his heavy German accent and dry humor he offers his opponents. He also isn't one to fight to the death on most occasions. When the going gets difficult, he isn't one to stick around.
However, even though his guild prides itself on getting the job done, there are still some things that Yeager's conscious will not allow. For example, he give assistance to the protagonists and thwarts one of the assassination attempts on their lives. Then he gives them information so they can proceed. Yeager's stated reason for this is that one ruler is bad for business.
In the last battle despite being surrounded by his guild, he fights the group alone and loses. He reveals like Raven, he has a blastia in his chest keeping him alive. The heroes question on his motivations. He doesn't give an answer, but only shows contentment as he dies.
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: After the Heracles puts a crater on the map. This occurs halfway through the game.

[third person / log sample]:
He placed the flowers near the small stone marker. It was a small token compared to what already had been placed. Letters. Floral arrangements much grander than his. Even offerings of food to assist the man on his journey. It seemed as if the entire city was fogged over with grief and sadness.
The Don's death had hit them all hard.
He wasn't lying to Yuri when he stated the world had lost a great man. Don Whitehorse was unique. A man not born every century. Those he had left behind could not fill the shoes nor have the heart of character the Don prided himself in. Though the irony didn't escape him. That was the idea in the end, to get the man out of the way. He quashed those thoughts for now. This was a time for mourning. A time for remembrance.
He could hear one of his girls wiping her eyes behind him. Yeager turned and patted her on the shoulder before ushering the two away from the memorial. The line was long with people wanting to give their respects to a great man. Again, Yeager couldn't argue their sentiments.
The stone cobblestone floor was hard and their heels clicked loudly across it as they made there way away from the gathering. As they passed by those in mourning, Yeager felt no remorse. His own guild, no, his hand even had caused the events that led to this. He regretted the loss of the Don, but not the course of his actions. Contradictory to be sure, but it was an action he would repeat again if it was necessary. If that is what his business dictated of him.
But his thoughts traveled then to Yuri Lowell and of days long past. Days when the Don still towered in his youth and was new to the ruler ship of the Union. He remembered the spirit he had. The fire and compassion for those around him. Yeager began to think that perhaps the Don was not so unique. That those that carried that same spirit walked among the ground with them. Yuri was bold, yes, but then again so was the Don. They both lived by their own rules forged by their own morals. Yeager patted the two girls on the shoulder and gave a slight grin not really explaining where his thoughts had lead him.
"Zat one will be troublesome, ja."
