Character Name: Shiba Kaien
Character Age: 27
Character Position and Ship: Confederate
Character History:

He always did believe that a good smile was a prerequisite for success.

If there was one thing to be said for the Shiba family, it was that nothing ever compromised their sense of justice. An old, respected, and established family, the Shibas had long since been a supporter of the masses, using both charisma and vast resources to fund labor unions, grassroots movements, and charities in the less fortunate systems. Often referred to as one of the four noble lineages, the Shiba family was by far the most popular among the general populace, and as a result, at the peak of their reign, their influence rivaled even the Confederation itself.

Of course, if there’s one thing that the Confederation refuses to tolerate, it’s a loss of control. The ceding of power. After all, that is the nature of a government; behind the mask of the corporation-for how else can one really categorize a government?-people gain the ability to hide, and one’s morals and ethics naturally sway when they’re out of the spotlight, safe from blame. It is this reason that governments are always far more dangerous than individuals alone.

None of that seemed to pose a threat for Kaien and his immediate family. There were three in the latest generation, all showing great promise: the eldest, Kaien himself, was known for his kind smile and great sense of humor, sister Kuukaku renown for her unequivocal interest in the family’s weaponry trade, and the youngest, Ganju, was noted for his strong sense of loyalty and boundless energy. The three of them were particularly close, always banding together at school, during playtime, and simply in almost any activity imaginable. Through this close interaction, Kaien learned the skills necessary to keep both of his siblings in check-Kuukaku had a particularly unyielding temper-and everyone expected him to be the next in line to take over the family company.

Of course, everything changed the instant his family fell out of favor with the Confederation. After waiting on their toes for years upon years, the Shibas had finally given the Confederation a reason to attack: they failed to produce an order of weapons for the Confederation by the designated date. The government, naturally, pounced.

It was a minor error at best, one that could not even be entirely blamed on the Shiba company. Weapons required the use of metal, among other things, and after some iron ore mines on Chi-3 collapsed, leaving dozens of citizens dead or trapped, production naturally slowed down. Worse yet, the Shibas refused to look to other mines in the system before at least attempting to help those hurt by the disaster on Chi-3. All that Kaien really remembers are the shouting matches between his parents and the upper members of the Confederation, who claimed that such a set-back endangered the peace and order that the Confederation had worked so hard to build over the years. Threats were thrown right and left, the government hesitant to turn to other companies due to the fact that the Shibas were by far the best weapons producers in the human race-having them as enemies posed a real threat to the Confederates.

A threat, of course, that was easily solved by eliminating the competition altogether.

The media was quick to claim that the entire incident was an accident. The Shibas, they declared, had been plotting against the peace, trying to rally with guerilla efforts in some of the more distant systems, and all that the Confederation had wanted to do was to stop those efforts. Casualties were not intended, and of course were very unfortunate, especially considering the fact that two of the three Shiba children had gone completely missing. As proof of the Confederation’s sympathy and compassion, the one remaining child, Kaien himself, would be taken under the care of the government, and everything he should want or need would be accounted for. Meanwhile, ownership of the Shiba company was handed over to the government for close monitoring, all in order to avoid such “tragedies” from occurring again.

In other words, Kaien became the government’s pawn. And he dealt with it, for he knew that there was absolutely no way that the government had let his two siblings vanish into the unknown, and for the sake of protecting their lives, he had to listen. All until he became strong enough, Kaien promised himself. It was just a matter of time.

Unfortunately, years upon years passed, and Kaien began growing increasingly comfortable with the life he led under the Confederation. His broad smile and charming wit had gained him quite a large base of support, aided of course in part by the tragedies he had overcome as a child. It was a life-not one that Kaien particularly cared for, but a life nonetheless. Somewhere along the line, he had hardened; somewhere along the line, he had forgotten the promises he had made to himself all those years ago.

All that changed one day, however, when Kaien happened across the woman who was to become his wife. There was something about Shiba Miyako that reawakened the Kaien that had remained dormant for so long. Unlike everyone else in the ranks, Miyako never bothered to kiss up to her superior; she knew her own inherent value, and wasn’t afraid to let it known. The mannerisms that Kaien had gained over time that had led many an unknowing virgin into his clutches never worked on Miyako, and while this was frustrating, the officer couldn’t help being intrigued as well. Slowly, Miyako chipped away at the shield Kaien had so carefully constructed; slowly, Kaien began to give himself to her. They were wed not too long afterwards, and everyone couldn’t help noticing the changes in their superior officer; whereas Kaien used to be a stickler for the rules, he now bent them skillfully, always managing to sneak out of training early to spend time with his wife. The women began swooning ever more at his feet, touched by his careful attentiveness to his wife, but it didn’t matter now. Kaien was in love.

Of course, the Confederation noticed as well. And being the puppetmasters that they were, they didn’t enjoy the thought of their star officer-the face of the government, almost-being controlled by that unpredictable emotion. The cause of her death was never reported, but Kaien didn’t care; all he knew was that she was gone, and as he held her cold, stiff hand in his own, he let it all go. Tears weren’t the only thing which resulted. All that Kaien knew was that he was tired, and he needed time to resort his thoughts. For several years, not a trace of him was found.

After several months, he finally reemerged, and the masses breathed a sigh of relief to see the trademark grin on his face once more. Everything seemed fine once more, and the officers who worked on the inside for the Confederation shot each other confused glances at Kaien’s apparent lack of vengeful behavior. However, what they didn’t realize was that the old Shiba Kaien was gone for good, replaced by a mere shell of what had once been. In a defensive move, both to protect his emotions and his sanity, Kaien had finally decided to forego any and all personal attachments he held. The Confederation had done its job; what had once been the eldest child of a loving, caring family was now a perfected weapon at the government’s disposal.

Or, well, that’s what everyone thinks.

Sample RP:

Her pants fluttered against his skin, body trembling slightly as he pulled her up and against his chest, feeling the tremors pass between the two of them. To Kaien, the process was almost mechanical; he knew exactly where to touch, when to touch, and how to touch. The last seemed to be the most important as his fingers tenderly stroked his partner below, pulling back only to make way for his tongue, laving back and forth, back and forth. She was more than ripe for the plucking, and Kaien couldn’t help but enjoy the taste of this sweet nectar-that was something that he appreciated, at least, knowing that hers was unique, that he would probably never get another opportunity to partake of her again.

It wasn’t long before he was buried in her, the pressure always managing to make Kaien a little light-headed and giddy. He smiled gently at the woman beneath him, and something in that expression set her off-whether to please him or to show her own pleasure was uncertain-as her head was thrown back, black locks fanning out on the pillow. He shushed her, bending down to gently kiss at her neck, tongue slipping out to taste the beading perspiration. She moaned, and Kaien couldn’t seem to suppress a small grin, nuzzling her playfully. “I love it when you do that,” he murmured, breathing harshly against her skin.

“Kaien,” she breathed, voice soft against the shell of his ear, “I love you, Kaien.”

“Do you now?” he drawled, thrusting a few final times before she cried out, clamping down hard around him. His name was like a prayer on her lips, repeated time and time again until it finally drove Kaien over, a deep groan escaping his throat as his hips jerked, pleasure shooting out in waves. Despite the fact that his body was now sated, Kaien could not say the same for his mind-as always, something tugged at him, the source of which he still was never certain.

Perhaps it was the hair which reminded him of her, the black a sharp contrast against the white of the pillow, the locks smooth and soft against his fingers. Perhaps it was the fact that no one seemed to be able to satisfy him quite as much as her; no one stayed long enough to learn his desires, and Kaien was always the one to compensate, working hard to please. Or perhaps it was the fact that those words always escaped the lips of each woman he bedded with, always over the course of just one night, cheapening their value and leaving a displeasuring taste in his mouth.

She was never the one to say it first.

“Mmm, that was amazing, gorgeous,” he crooned, teeth nipping gently at the skin of her neck.

“You know why, don’t you, Kaien?” A pair of pale, slender arms snaked around his neck as she buried her fingers in his coarse locks, disheveling them even more.

The young man chuckled in response, pining her hips down with his own as he smirked at his wife. “Because I’ve got the skills and the goods,” he murmured, voice gravelly with lust.

“Surely you don’t think that you’re the most talented and well-endowed man in the system, do you?” she teased, snorting at his answer.

The smile on his face faded slightly as he pulled back, simply gazing at her for a few seconds, a calloused thumb rubbing along her cheek. The answer was obvious, but Kaien enjoyed moments such as this, when her gut reaction wasn’t to be snarky or to win an argument-for she always did.

“Well, that, and I love you.”

It wasn’t embellished, and it was never stressed more than it needed to be. Kaien bent down once more, capturing her lips with his own, mouth moving easily over hers as he cupped her face.

“That’s more like it.”

The body at Kaien’s side shifted, her gaze rising in an attempt to meet his, and for a moment, Kaien glanced down, face expressionless and eyes glazed. It left just as quickly as it came, however, and soon Kaien was smiling once more, running a hand through her sweaty tresses and pulling her closer, tucking her head under his chin.

Most people would have been fooled.

Sample Journal:

So the higher-ups told me to do a few rounds, y’know, to make sure that the Gotei ships are in tip-top shape. I don’t know about the others, but I just checked out the Future 7, and the people on there are pretty damn funny. Gotta few hard workers on board, of course-never doubt Captain Kuchiki, that’s for sure, nor his little sister Rukia-but with the tempers of some of the others on board, you can’t help but wonder how they even manage to keep it together. I’m not complaining though. Good people, the F7ers.

[Private]

That Rukia. She’s surprisingly naïve. In a way, it’s refreshing to see someone who I could manipulate so easily, who I have such an influence over. Not that a girl so insignificant could really help me in any manner the way she is right now… but who knows? Maybe with time, things will change.

For now, I’ll just enjoy things as they are. No need to hold back.
