Merlin 3.11 The Sorcerer's Shadow

FINALLY the show addressed the fact that in many ways Merlin has become that servant boy bullied by Arthur and his mates in the very first episode. This even makes "Love in the Time of Dragons" and Arthur using Merlin as target practice à la "The Dragon's Call" a little easier to stomach. Instead of being there just for laughs, it shows that Merlin isn't the same boy as the one who stood up to Arthur and his posse of bullies twice in the pilot - the second time around after he knew Arthur was the Crown Prince.

The scene in which Merlin confronts Gilli about using magic for his own gain, that he knows what it's like to hide and pretend to be something he is not, and Gilli tells him they should be proud of who they are? It had so much coming-out-of-the-closet subtext it was hard to keep up with the actual context.

Gilli: I'm not going to apologize for who I am! You can be a servant and pretend you're less than them but...
Merlin: No, that's not what I do!
Gilli: No? You're defending the King! Protecting a man who would have you dead.
Merlin: But I'm protecting you!
Gilli: You've been pretending for so long now, that you've actually forgotten who you are.

And so did Merlin's goodbye to Gilli: I know it doesn't seem like it now, but one day magic will be permitted once again. And, when that day arrives, you no longer have to hide who you are, your gifts will be recognized. We...we will be free. And, who knows, maybe then our paths will cross again.

Is shall refrain from making any "Dudley is a wizard!" jokes and simply state that Harry Melling was great in the episode. Gilli is definitely another character I would like to see return to Camelot after Arthur has assumed the throne. At least, let's have him back for the Pride Parade, yes?

Still, as much as I liked the scenes between Merlin and Gilli, it sucks major ass that Merlin came out to Gilli about his magic after knowing him for a couple of days, yet never did the same for Morgana while she was trying to understand her powers and dreams. Magic is a bit of boys' club, isn't it? :/

I was surprised at the end when Uther told Arthur he had finally proven himself ready to rule. It worked well within the context of the episode but seemed rather ridiculous after last week and Arthur threatening to leave Camelot and his duties in order to save Gwen. Switching the episode order really has messed with the already weak continuity this series. I doubt there's any hope they might at least correct the order for the dvds?

The small amount of A/M that was had, I enjoyed. So much love for Arthur asking Merlin for advice and Merlin implying that he and Arthur are 'living together'. If only we could get this kind of domesticity without the domestic violence in all the episodes.

And eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh for Arthur's eyes following Merlin's hands while he was ehm, polishing the prince's sword.

Next week: The Quest for the Holy Grail Cup of Life! I CAN'T WAIT.
