I watched the Disney Channel movie Avalon High yesterday. I have always wanted to see a live action Arthurian high school AU, even if it means watching a low budget Disney tv-movie. It was pretty much what I expected: mostly entertaining enough, but not exactly ambitious. Luckily, the fastforward button continues to exist.
I haven't read the book by Meg Cabot yet, but Wikipedia kindly informed me of the differences between the novel and the film. For instance, my favourite thing about the movie, Arthur being reincarnated as a girl, the main character Allie, is apparently different in the book. Story-wise it does make more sense to have her turn out to be the Lady of the Lake, but to have the Once and Future King be a girl is undoubtedly more awesome.
I thought it amusing that in the novel the character of Merlin corresponds to Mr. Morton, a middle-aged high school teacher, but in the movie they have written Merlin as a geeky, dark-haired student boy who becomes Allies's best friend at Avalon high. Smells a bit like destiny, if you ask me.
Anyhow, as long as Arthur is a girl, I'm more than happy to ship Arthur/Guinevere.
Although I really enjoyed the geeky Merlin kid in the movie, I like the idea of Merlin the history/literature teacher as a kind of Watcher to Allie's Buffy. Even better if they made a tv show based on Avalon High, and Anthony Stewart Head were to play the teacher. I mean, the Merlin writers have to kill off Uther at some point, right?
