I can't believe that, what an asshole. If you have a copy of the lease you should read it over real careful and see if you can catch him having broken some rule.
Too bad it's not next summer, otherwise I could get all legalese on his ass.
yeah, the landlord said he thought we didn't want to move back. based on a conversation he allegedly had with a girl (either me, adri, or jones) in april or something, in which the girl said they weren't 100% on knowing if we were moving back. it's likely that he talked to adri, and that SHE wasn't 100% on moving, as she thought she might be going to yale.
so he says he went to the house, and the subletters gave him the numbers we left for them (my house # and jones' cell #). he called each number once, didn't leave a message, and decided that we probably didn't want to keep the house.
wouldn't it be fitting if there was an untimely accident with that house.... maybe it BURNS DOWN before the new people get to move in? MUAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA
You can look around at this stuff on tenant's rights and this stuff on terminating the tenancy specifically.
Hilights include "A tenant and landlord can agree to terminate a tenancy at any time . . . However, just because a lease is for a fixed term does not mean that there is agreement to terminate" and "A tenancy can be terminated by a landlord only for reasons allowed by the Tenant Protection Act" and "In most cases, a landlord must give a tenant a Notice to Terminate a Tenancy in writing stating the termination date and the reason. The notice must be in a form approved by the Tribunal."
Call him and tell him you're taking him to the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal.

i'm kind of at a loss for what to do. i'm pretty uncomfortable with being alone in having to make a decision about where we're going to live.
just a disaster.

Did he say why he signed it with new people? Did he not know that you guys intended to keep it another year?
Hopefully Nick gets back to you so you can at least tag-team the project.
