I found this description on VisitScotland.com regarding travel by rail:
"Journey times from London can be as little as 4½ hours to Edinburgh and 5 hours to Glasgow; from Manchester or York, knock off about 2 hours; from Bristol add about 2 hours. Beyond Edinburgh or Glasgow, allow another 2½ hours to reach Aberdeen, or 3½ hours to Inverness."
I've found though that traveling by air is the cheapest and fastest way to go when traveling between countries - for an intercity trip, the train works just fine. Ryanair.com is a great site for finding cheap flights. There are also plenty of companies that run ferries between Ireland and Scotland. I couldn't recommend any in particular b/c I don't plan to travel that way; the cheapest I've found has been about 21 pounds though which isn't bad. But then, you have to add the cost of getting to the ferry as well.
