Intentions matter, but intentions are also a matter of perspective.

Ether way you slice it this was illegal, but it was also done with the intention of direct harm to another's character. The illegality of the situation would be tempered, in my eyes, if any evidence of wrong doing had been turned over to the proper athorities to make that determination. Instead it was made public, turning it into something other than it is. Now, hyperbole and rehtoric are drowning out the truth, and there will never be any constructive outcome in any direction.

However I have very strong convitions about right and wrong. The individuals who attempted to shut down the LHC via hacking, when they are identified, should each receive a smart bomb.

On the intent issue - it's more that people seem to be spinning his intent as proof of a conspiracy. As though it's impossible for people to have the same intent that a theoretical conspiracy would ...

I don't think what was done was right, even if he'd found something obviously election-shattering. But then again, I too have strong convictions as to right and wrong. :)

I had a discussion with one of the people on another board about this - people who actually have a case tend to get ignored when they've done things that were illegal. E.G., Mitnick - it's basically ridiculous, imho, that he was held for four and a half years without trial, but most people don't have any sympathy for him at all.

The best strategies seem to require keeping yourself clean.

The whole "LHC is gonna be the end of the world" thing seems idiotic, to me, and your smart bomb presents do indeed seem appropriate. :)

Yeah, I agree with you about Mitnick; he was made an example of because people freaked the fuck out. The public and the justice system didn't understand anything about what had happen and how and they were terrified that this pandora's box existed.

And yeah, the LHC hackers really pissed me off, for me, it was akin to trying to wreck the first Moon mission. Trying to sabatoge that level of human endevor is a crime against humanity.
