Since starting school (my last semester) I've been insanely busy each night at the newspaper. I can't go to swim practice or be on the team, but I'm learning a heck of a lot about the news and journalism--and I love it.

Hopefully I'll get to leave soon.

I'm doing it, applying for a program in Berlin covered by the American-German Fulbright Association. With the urging of an old professor and the why-not outlook I've adopted, I figured I have nothing to lose and a world of experience to gain. The days aren't necessarily lazy, but there's a rhythm to them that is soothing. Waking up early when the sun hasn't heated the air, I take the puppy for a quick walk. I think lifeguarding is the tai chi of working. People underappreciate it. It is slow going, intense and requires a great bit of focus. After 20 sunsoaked hours at the pool this weekend, this is my conclusion. Well, I made it through my first night as news editor. It was really scary, but I think I'll survive once I get the swing of things. Here's to a fantastic fall!

Sitting at a sidewalk table outside The Globe, I noticed a bunch of feathers floating from the sky. I pointed them out to my friend and asked, "where do you think those came from?"

"From a bird I suppose," she said.

"Do you think it exploded or ran into something? It's an awful lot of feathers."

I left school Weds night to come to see my grandpa. I never made it before he died in the hospital. Michaela says he's much better-his breathing was labored and he died as a result of his insides exploding. Not a pretty end really ( Read more... )
